Biden: “It is clearly within the right of the government to determine what type of weapons can be owned by the public”

LANSDOWNE, Va. — In a speech Wednesday night, Vice President Joe Biden implored House Democrats to continue to fight for gun control legislation despite the potential political ramifications of doing so.

Biden was visibly emotional as he spoke of the December school shooting in Newtown, Conn., that took the lives of 20 children and six adults and called it a “profound loss” for America.

“I can imagine how we will be judged as individuals, we will be judged as a Congress, we will be judged as a nation if we do nothing,” Biden told House Democrats at their retreat in Lansdowne, Va. “It’s simply unacceptable.”

The vice president said he rejected those who would say the political risk “is too high, the outcome is too certain.”

His voice rising, Biden said that in the 54 days since the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, there have been 1,600 shooting deaths, and specifically mentioned the death of Hadiya Pendleton, a Chicago teenager who had marched in the inauguration parade only a few weeks ago.

“Enough is enough is enough,” he said to applause from House Democrats, who are spending three days at the Virginia retreat. President Obama and former President Bill Clinton will also address the group.

“Many of you have scars on your back like I do from having acted, attempted to act, and contining to try act to deal with the senseless gun violence in America,” he said.

The former Delaware senator recalled the 1994 bill he helped craft, that included a now-expired federal assault weapons ban, and shortly after they passed it, Democrats “lost the Congress.”

“Some people attribute that to the tough stands people had to take, particularly on the assault weapons ban,” he said. “People have walked away learning the wrong lesson from that saying, ‘You know what? It’s demonstrable but it’s too risky to take on some of this stuff because look what happened last time we did this.’”

Biden declared that the world had changed, as had public attitudes on gun control. Additionally, through things like social media, “the ability to misrepresent our positions has changed.”

He also said there was not a simple solution to the problem of mass shootings: Biden said there was “no single answer to ensure this will never happen again.”

The vice president has been charged with leading the President’s task force on gun violence prevention. He told the members attending the retreat that he was unwavering in his belief that the recommendations the task force has put forward are not in violation of the Second Amendment.

“It is clearly within the right of the government to determine what type of weapons can be owned by the public.”

“Don’t tell me because we can’t solve it all, we can’t act at all. … when people tell me you cant prevent these kinds of occurrences that doesn’t mean we can’t do something so god forbids if it happens again, diminish the carnage,” he said.

  1. Of course this speech would be held for the benefit of the minions of delusional hypocrites who think government has authority over it’s people.
Welcome to America Mr. Biden, you are nothing more than subservient to the wishes of ‘We the People’ and have no right to determine anything ‘We the People’ don’t designate.

  2. “Biggest terrorists in the world”. You talk like a cowardly traitor. It’s people like you that would have allowed Hitler to take over the planet. You would have fought for the King of England in 1776!

  3. Biden you are a communist just like the rest of them. And, your little drama you try pulling off was so sickening. What about all the children at columbine high school, and the others? I guess they don’t count. Really you people should be more worried about getting this country out of debt, and let those poor little children rest in peace, and the families of those innocent children leave them alone, or help them by getting them some phsycological help. You people want to take away peoples only means of protection, from idiots just like the ones that killed those in all of those schools. And, leave us unable to protect our loved ones, while you, and President Obama have the C.I.A. to protect you. Really you people need to grow up, and worry about our country, before some sick ass country desires to attack us while you people are so fucking rapped up in disarming us. What cha gonna do if we have no guns and this happens? Huh? Whose gonna protect you then what 3,or 4 million soldiers, or would you rather have 150, or 250 million people with gun rights. I know which one id pick its a no brainer. But, I guess stood is, stupid does.

  4. No where but in the delusional minds of Dictators does the Government have any rights other than those bestowed upon them by the people. And If All the People cannot agree then it has no authority at all.

  5. This man has got to be the dumbest V.P. in the history of the u.s. He makes Quale look like an Einstein , and that’s saying something .

  6. And this man is a heart-beat away from being our president. God help us. We must be praying, praying, praying for wisdom for these trying times.

  7. Joe the Veep hops wherever he goes because he was born with one foot in his mouth. Think again Joe. We are not wards of the state.

  8. Joe, we noticed that your team traded the admission that there was possibly more than one shooter at Sandy Hook for an extension of the time the evidence of what happened there.will remain sealed. That’s given you quite a head start with your emotional appeals to irrational politics. It’s clear that both you and the President have breached your oaths of office to uphold the Constitution.

  9. Governments do not have rights. The citizens of the country the government represent have (or must have) those rights, including the right to invalidate the government when it oversteps it’s bounds. It’s about that time.

  10. When the stupid cops drove up on a SUV that was similar to the vehicle they were looking for, the cops just opened fired on 2 ladies who were delivering newspapers of all things. How do you get two white old ladies mixed up with a 6 foot 4 inch bald blackman that wieghts 300 pounds. Absolute proof that scared, cowardly cops always shoot first and fill out the paperwork last, and could give a shit about you and me. They really go off their rockers when one of their boys in blue gets shot. They remind me of a street gang but all their gear is paid for by taxpayers.

  11. There may be a terrible catastrophe headed our way and our governments may be slaughtering us by the billions.

  12. In fact, contrary to Biden and other “gun-control” fanatics, under Article I, Section 8, Clauses 15 and 16 of the Constitution it is the duty of Congress to provide for arming “the Militia of the several States”–that is, all free adult individuals from 16 years of age on up–with firearms suitable for performing the duties of the Militia: namely, “to execute the Laws of the Union, suppress Insurrections and repel Invasions”. The performance of the last of these duties requires arms at least as good as the arms of potential invaders, which requires arms at least as good as those of the regular Armed Forces of the United States. The same duty attaches to the States’ legislatures if Congress defaults on its duty, because the Militia are “the Militia of the several States”. And if both Congress and the States default, then the people themselves must provide themselves with such arms through the free market (there being no other source), because the people themselves constitute the Militia. This is why, to preserve “[a] well regulated Militia” which is “necessary to the security of a free State”, the Second Amendment commands that “the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed”. All of that should be simple enough even for Biden to understand; and if it is not, then what good is the “Oath or Affirmation, to support th[e] Constitution” which he took (Article VI, Clause 3)?

  13. Joe it’s not weapons we need to get rid of. It is you and soetero we need to flush down the commode of history. Please give the American People and the world a huge break and move to Israhell and let them do a chosen on you and yours. The piles of rubble that denotes their prescience will inspire you to new and greater lows.

  14. When my government puts down it’s arms, I will put down mine. Stop your killing of innocent civilians all over the world fighting the invisible enemy “terrorism.” You (we, the USA) are the biggest terrorists in the world. Killing innocent human beings from 40 thousand feet by unmanned drones with the ‘trigger man’ sitting comfortably behind a video monitor in Colorado Springs, COLO. THAT, is terror. THAT is disgusting. Judge, jury and executioner all in one sick, evil system. Wake up everyone. America IS the terrorist

  15. BTW Joe, why a “retreat”? Oh the irony. You should’ve come down to Houston with Piers and given your speech to the masses at the convention center

  16. With all due respect to Mr. Biden (change that; I have lost all respect for the man) the United States Supreme Court ruled in United States vs Miller that the Second Amendment specifically reserves to the American people military arms. At the very least, after today’s debacle in southern California in which armed police could not protect themselves from a violent crime (and promptly shot two innocent victims in the resulting police melee) it is clear that the people of the United States have a legitimate right to keep and bear arms equal if not superior to the violent criminals, which as of right now includes police officers and everyone who got weapons through the US’ Fast and Furious debacle.
