New House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy introduces Nancy Pelosi — and hands her the gavel
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, a Republican from California, welcomed lawmakers to the first day of the 116th Congress before introducing newly-elected House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

California Democrat returns to speakership amid clash with Trump, partial shutdown

Rep. Nancy Pelosi won election as speaker of the House of Representatives on Thursday, putting the California Democrat in control of the gavel for a second time at the opening of the 116th Congress.
Pelosi, who previously served as speaker from 2007 to 2011, clinched the vote with support from 220 House members. More than a dozen Democrats voted for someone else, or voted “present.”
The Californian’s return to the role comes amid a standoff with President Donald Trump and a partial government shutdown that has entered its 13th day, and as some of her fellow Democrats have balked at a package of rules for the new Congress.

Pelosi and Trump continue to clash over Trump’s proposed border wall, the sticking point in reopening several federal agencies. Pelosi told NBC News that she would give “nothing for the wall” to Trump.

The Liberty Beacon Project is now expanding at a near exponential rate, and for this we are grateful and excited! But we must also be practical. For 7 years we have not asked for any donations, and have built this project with our own funds as we grew. We are now experiencing ever increasing growing pains due to the large number of websites and projects we represent. So we have just installed donation buttons on our main websites and ask that you consider this when you visit them. Nothing is too small. We thank you for all your support and your considerations … (TLB)
