VIEWER DISCRETION IS ADVISED
Recently I talked to you about child abuse. While the topic of child abuse is difficult to discuss, sexual abuse is even more difficult. Often, it is assumed that a child abused sexually is female; however, males are also sexually abused and the statics are overwhelming. Unfortunately, we know that all types of abuse are under-reported… and even more so in the male victim populous.
What is quite horrific about abuse is that it is most commonly committed by a friend of the family or a member of the family. It can also be perpetrated by those who live in close proximity to the home and are acquainted with the victim in some fashion.
As an example, guest Luca Majno, who is on this episode to bring awareness to this specific topic. Many people who have become victims don’t share that they have been victimized. This was true for Mr. Majno, who now receives little bits of healing each time he is able to share the horrific details of what happened to his at the approximate age of 11 years old.
In this candid interview, Mr. Majno provides graphic details of the actual event where he was victimized.
In Luca Majno’ s case, he actually went to his parents and law enforcement at the time and was told to stop lying. Luca is adamant and focused that parents really need to be involved in their children’s lives and not dismiss when a child comes forward with an accusation that may seem unbelievable.
It truly is important that parents really develop and maintain an open line of communication with their children and really listen to the words of their children and be alert to behavior suddenly changes or begins to change over time. Not all children will directly reveal when they have been violated sexually. It is up to parents to pay attention to their children.
I was in eating lunch not long ago and a person close to me noticed the child sitting with his parents behind me. The comment made to me was to take a look and see how sad it is that the child sitting there was playing on a tablet- not a paper tablet, but an electronic one. We had wondered what happened to the time when families sad around the table and actually communicated with one another. This type of communicating builds trust and opens the line of communication within each member of the family.
I urge each of you to pay attention to the children around you. Watch and listen to what they say and their behaviors. If you think a child you know may be a victim of any type of abuse, contact your local law enforcement or social service agency. It would be better to have a concern investigated and unfounded rather than having a child being abused.
