Many have written about love, one such man, Alfred Lord Tennyson’s poem In Memoriam:27, 1850 speaks deeply,

“I hold it true, whate’er befall;
I feel it, when I sorrow most;
‘Tis better to have loved and lost
Than never to have loved at all.”

Some have yet to know love, others have had only one, and still there are those who have had the chance to love again. Guest Shirley Melis shares intimate details on her life’s journey with love and loss and the ability to love again. She shares how the book she wrote, “Banged-Up Heart: Dancing with Love and Loss,” has even helped a woman who was experiencing victimization from an abusive relationship. Her insight has opened the portal for some who have lost hope in obtaining love, removing the tunnel vision and creating a kaleidoscope of new vision, along with building inspiration to have hope and love again.

On this episode, we also talk about grief with Melis sharing how we must give ourselves permission to grieve. We chat about how people react to those who are experiencing loss. She points out how the load for others is so heavy, their reaction to the loss we face may not be what we expect. Therefore, we should not judge how people react, as there are some who just don’t know what to say or do; however, loss is universal. Melis goes on to share how her experience with loss initiated her decision to join a grief support group. She was surrounded with others who could identify with what she was going through, and learned empathy from it. In addition, she sought out professional therapy. There are many ways we deal with loss and it is different for each of us.

Melis is a longtime business writer, travel writer, and newspaper columnist who traveled the world interviewing everyone from busboys to heads of international organizations before launching a career in public relations in Washington, D.C.

Melis, wrote the memoir “Banged-Up Heart: Dancing with Love and Loss” which delves deep into the author’s personal story of finding love late, losing it early, and discovering the strength to love again. A fascinating odyssey, a creative and erotic journey as Melis and her second husband work lovingly together to blend their dreams—until a mysterious bump on his forehead starts them on a tragic struggle against the dark hand of fate.

A graduate of Vassar, Shirley Melis has created an intimate memoir bearing eloquent witness to the kind of wild trust that can grow in the heart of an ordinary woman thrust into circumstances that few others must face. Now retired, she lives in Galisteo, New Mexico
