UN Denounces Israeli Abuses Against Detained Palestinian Children

500 children were killed and hundreds of thousands were found to be psychologically unstable after the last Israeli attack in Gaza.

The UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, Makarim Wibisono, called on Israel to “cease the abuse of lots of kids” that the Israeli regime holds in detention.

“I am extremely concerned about the treatment given to the Palestinians, including children in detention centers in Israel,” said Wibisono as he presented his latest report to the Human Rights Council of the UN during its twenty-eighth session.

“As we speak, scores of Palestinian children are in Israeli detention centers. I appeal to Israel to take the relevant decisions dramatically and immediately to cease the abuse,” he added.

Wibisono echoed a report from the United Nations Children’s Fund published two years ago in which it was concluded that the abuse of children in the detention system appeared to be widespread, systematic and institutionalized.

“No child deserves to go through terrifying nights of arrests, physical and verbal abuse, denial of access to a lawyer, and humiliation,” said the reporter, who recalled that Israeli children living in illegal settlements in the occupied territories “are not treated in the same way. “

The rapporteur assumed that since the report was published, Israel conducts interrogations in a language that the child can understand, but claims that this does not occur in cases of children who throw stones, which is the most common charge against them .

Wibisono remembered the price paid by Palestinian children in Gaza after the last conflict, which left 500 dead and 400,000 children in need of psychosocial support.

“The ferocity of the destruction and the high proportion of civilian lives lost in Gaza raises serious questions about Israel’s compliance with international humanitarian law and the principles of proportionality, distinction and precaution in attacks”.

“The high number of hospitals, ambulances, schools and private homes destroyed despite the special protection that is granted to them, is an example of this,” he added.

Moreover, Wibisono expressed his “dismay as most people take it lightly when excessive use of force by the Israeli security forces ends in injury or death of Palestinians.”

He recalled the case of two Palestinian teenagers who posed no threat and were killed in cold blood last May at the hands of Israeli security forces.

The speaker again asked Israel to let him enter their territory to carry out his task more accurately and fairly, and reminded that “peace begins when human rights are respected.”
