95% of Hungarians oppose Ukraine joining EU – online referendum

ER Editor: Readers know we believe everything going on everywhere, but especially in the EU, is theatre. Here is the latest move. Allegedly, 95% of Hungarians support keeping Ukraine out of the EU, which permits Orban to stand squarely up to the EU. Note below the mention of the 18th (eighteenth!) sanctions package against Russia. You can’t make this up.

This came, of course, just as some actor playing Zelensky showed up at the NATO meeting —

Two whole years ago, maybe the same actor —

Another NATO moment. Who’s playing Meloni?

95% of Hungarians oppose Ukraine joining EU – Orban

Millions have voted almost unanimously against the move, in a “consultative” online referendum

An overwhelming majority of Hungarians oppose Ukraine’s accession to the EU, Prime Minister Viktor Orban has announced, citing the results of the Voks 2025 referendum.

The consultative vote, which asked a single question – “Do you support Ukraine’s European Union membership?” – ran from mid-April to June 20.

He emphasized that Hungary’s position cannot be bypassed, as Ukraine’s membership requires unanimous consent from all 27 EU member states.

“A unanimous decision is needed even to launch negotiations on the matter. We don’t have it, therefore they should not happen. Nothing can happen today that has a legal effect on the matter of Ukraine’s EU membership… because Hungary does not support it,” Orban stressed.

We don’t read tea leaves well, but we wonder if this will be the next theatrical bone of contention as the ‘EU’ (are they actors, too?) tries to oppose Orban’s domestic referendum.

95 percent of Votes 2025 voters rejected Ukraine’s accession to the EU, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced in Brussels on Thursday.

Speaking to journalists ahead of the EU summit in Brussels, the Prime Minister said that the total number of votes cast was 2 million 284,732, of which 2 million 168,431 were cast by those who did not support Ukraine’s accession to the EU, with 95 percent of the votes being “no” and 5 percent of those who voted “yes”. Viktor Orbán said he came with a strong mandate.

“My voice has become thicker and more masculine, I will say in the voice of more than two million Hungarians during the negotiations that Hungary does not support Ukraine’s accession to the European Union,” he said.

Asked whether he thought it was conceivable that Hungary would be bypassed at the EU summit and 26 or 25 member states would adopt a joint declaration on Ukraine’s EU membership, the Prime Minister said that Hungary could not be bypassed on the issue of Ukraine’s EU membership because, in the end and in the course of the negotiations, a unanimous decision would be needed to open a cluster. This is not the case, so it will not happen, nothing can happen today that would have a legal effect on Ukraine’s EU membership, he said.

He noted that “we can make statements, we can talk”, but the European Union will not have a common position, because Hungary does not support it. “But those who disagree with us, separately, twenty-six or as many as there are, can say what they want, there is freedom here too,” he said.

In response to another question, he said that Ukraine’s membership of the EU would also integrate war into the European Union, which poses a threat. We do not want to be in a community with a country at war, he said.

In response to a question, the Prime Minister also said: Hungary has undoubtedly received “very good offers” on the 18th EU sanctions package, but they are working on it “a little bit more”. Asked about the resolution of the US-European tariff war, he said he was pessimistic, saying that the problem was that on the US side there was a “heavyweight negotiator”, while in the European Union there were “lightweight” negotiators, so the US president was outnumbered in this case.

Asked about migration, he said the Hungarian position on this issue is one of rebellion. He added that there have been hundreds of discussions on how to make EU rules on migration more effective, but nothing is happening.

The only way to stop migration is the way Hungary is acting, i.e. that no one is allowed to enter Hungary unless they have a valid entry permit issued by the Hungarian authorities, he added.

On migration, he proposed a rebellion to all his EU counterparts, reminding that Hungarians have to pay a million euros a day to stop migrants. This is the price of revolution, he noted.

So we have just installed donation buttons on our websites and ask that you consider this when you visit them. Nothing is too small. We thank you for all your support and your considerations … (TLB)

1 Comment on 95% of Hungarians oppose Ukraine joining EU – online referendum

  1. As a Hungarian citizen, I would like to clarify that the majority of votes were NOT cast ONLINE, but on paper in envelopes, with only a negligible number of votes cast online. Thus, the possibility of manipulation was very small, and those eligible to vote did indeed reject Ukraine’s accession to the EU.
