PARIS — French authorities raided the National Rally headquarters Wednesday morning as part of a major investigation into whether the party broke campaign finance laws during recent elections.
Prosecutors said the probe, which was opened last year, is examining whether the party funded campaigns in part through illegal loans between Jan. 1, 2020, and July 12, 2024.
Although no individual or entity has been charged yet, the investigations concern possible acts of money laundering and the use of forged documents during the party’s 2022 French presidential campaign, the French legislative elections of the same year and the European elections in 2024.
Translation: The searches, conducted under extraordinary conditions, target alleged “habitual lenders.” A vague charge, without a clear definition, already being investigated by the Campaign Accounts Commission. Suspecting our activists—often elderly, honest, committed—who lend to the RN due to the lack of banks willing to do so, of “illegally practicing the profession of banker” is a farce. This display of force has only one purpose: to provide a spectacle for news channels, to rummage through the private correspondence of the leading opposition party, to seize all our internal documents. Nothing to do with justice, everything to do with politics.

Bardella Slams ‘Grave Attack on Democracy’ as RN Offices Searched
France’s leading opposition party is under investigation over campaign financing—though no one has been charged after a year-long inquiry.

French financial police carried out a raid on the Rassemblement National’s (RN) headquarters in Paris on Wednesday morning as part of an ongoing investigation into political campaign financing. The party’s president, Jordan Bardella, denounced the move as “a new operation of harassment” and a “serious attack on democratic pluralism.”

Around twenty armed officers from the financial crimes unit, accompanied by two investigating judges, began the search at 8:50 a.m. Bardella said all emails, documents, and accounting records from the RN—the leading opposition force in France—were seized, though the exact grounds for the operation remain unclear.
In addition to the party offices, the homes and business premises of RN-linked individuals were also searched. According to the Paris prosecutor, the probe concerns possible fraud against a public body and the habitual granting of personal loans to a political party—activities connected to the RN’s 2022 presidential and legislative campaigns, as well as the 2024 European elections.
Investigators are also examining alleged overbilling and fictitious services potentially included in state reimbursement claims. The inquiry, opened in July 2024, has not yet resulted in any formal charges. Bardella remains defiant, accusing authorities of political targeting.
