Marine Le Pen’s Mayors Take Down EU Flags

ER Editor: This isn’t the first time French mayors have been replacing the EU flag on their buildings this year. It echoes the flag campaign in the UK where locals have been erecting union jacks in their communities.

A sample from X —

Translation: Mayors RN: yes to EU money, no to the flag. In Carcassonne, Cagnes-sur-Mer or Harnes, some local officials are removing the European Union flag while continuing to benefit from its aid

A corrective to the money argument above —

Translation: A fine piece of disinformation from the public service, even as France is a net contributor to the EU budget. European funds are in reality French money, without free use of which they skim off nearly 40%

Rassemblement National Mayors Take Down EU Flags

One RN Mayor stressed how “the only flag that truly matters to us is the blue-white-and-red.”

Newly elected mayors from France’s Rassemblement National (RN) party have begun their mandates by removing European Union flags from the pediments of town halls in several municipalities, including Carcassonne, Harnes, Cagnes-sur-Mer, and Canohès.

The gesture is presented by the RN as a symbolic affirmation of national sovereignty, rather than a formal step toward leaving the EU.

In Carcassonne, the mayor broadcast the removal on social media, prompting mixed reactions among residents. While some welcomed the move as a statement of self-determination, others questioned its purpose, noting that the towns continue to benefit from European funds for local projects such as airports and agricultural support. (ER: Yes, but how much are they paying to the EU in the first place for this EU largesse?)

RN officials, including mayor Christophe Barthès, defended the action, emphasizing that European funds would not be affected. Barthès stated

The only flag that is worthy in my eyes and in the eyes of my compatriots is the blue-white-red flag.

The party maintains that no formal instructions were given.

Several RN politicians support and have congratulated these mayors. with MP Jean-Philippe Tanguy in the lead. For him, the European flag “is illegitimate” since the French said “no” in 2005 in the referendum on the European Constitution.

Responding on X, French foreign minister Jean-Noël Barrot called the removals “a betrayal of who we are”—which undermined France’s commitment to the EU as a means of ensuring peace, preserving independence, and asserting a vision of the world.

The Liberty Beacon Project is now expanding at a near exponential rate, and for this we are grateful and excited! But we must also be practical. For 7 years we have not asked for any donations, and have built this project with our own funds as we grew. We are now experiencing ever increasing growing pains due to the large number of websites and projects we represent. So we have just installed donation buttons on our websites and ask that you consider this when you visit them. Nothing is too small. We thank you for all your support and your considerations … (TLB)
