Microsoft to terminate Skype messaging app in May
The software company is directing Skype users to its Teams app, which it plans to focus on going forward.

Microsoft announced Friday that it will be shutting down the messaging service Skype on May 5.
The software company, CNBC reported, is directing Skype users to its Teams app.
“We felt like now is the time because we can be simpler for the market, for our customer base, and we can deliver more innovation faster just by being focused on Teams,” Jeff Teper, president of Microsoft 365 collaborative apps and platforms, told CNBC.
Skype was launched in 2003 by a team of developers in Estonia, and it was originally designed as a tool to allow people to call each other for free. In 2005, eBay purchased Skype Technogies SA for $2.6 billion. Microsoft acquired Skype in 2011 for $8.5 billion.
