The French Far-Left Has a Major Problem as Elections Loom

ER Editor: Yesterday was a day of marches, it seems. In addition to the anti-migration march in Manchester, one was held in Lyon to protest the violent death of right-wing activitist Quentin Deranque at the hands of some Antifa-related activists / thugs on Feb. 14.

France Still in Shock After Murder of Young Patriot by Far-Left Mob

The BBC has this from yesterday with, by now, a pretty obvious question but one which needs stating —

Killing of nationalist student leaves French far left in deep trouble as elections loom

Is the far left about to replace the far right as the pariah of French politics?

The question is inescapable following the killing in Lyon of nationalist student Quentin Deranque by suspected far-left militants.

Deranque was killed on 12 February after a small university protest by far-right feminists, who he was supposed to be protecting.

Mobile phone footage shows him being repeatedly kicked and punched on the ground by masked and hooded young men. He died of head injuries.

Since then a torrent of condemnation has come down on the main party on the radical left, La France Insoumise (France Unbowed), which has a bloc of some 70 MPs in the 577-member National Assembly – and on its leader, veteran firebrand Jean-Luc Mélenchon.

On Saturday afternoon about 3,000 people held a rally in memory of Quentin Deranque at the place in Lyon where he was attacked. Security was tight and police kept opponents well away.

Those attending were from an assortment of small traditionalist, Catholic, nationalist and neo-fascist groups. Significantly the populist right National Rally – France’s biggest party – kept away.

The seven suspects now charged in connection with the killing were all members of, or close to, an organisation called La Jeune Garde (The Young Guard) which used to provide security for LFI before it was banned last year.

This Le Monde article (browsers will translate) clarifies the problem for the mainstream far-left in France currently. It used to be that Marine Le Pen had the image problem …

Justice for Quentin: Lyon Prepares for Major March

As investigations continue and suspects face charges, supporters say the rally is about remembrance—and accountability.

A heavy police presence is being deployed in Lyon on Saturday as thousands prepare to march in honour of slain activist Quentin Deranque, whose death last week has shaken France and intensified political tensions ahead of next year’s presidential race

The rally, expected to draw between 2,000 and 3,000 participants, will proceed under tight security despite calls from Lyon’s Green mayor to ban it. Residents along the planned route have boarded up ground-floor windows, fearing clashes with counter-protesters.

Deranque, 23, died from head injuries sustained during violent confrontations on the sidelines of a demonstration against a politician from the far-left La France Insoumise (LFI). Supporters say he had attended to protect members of the women’s collective Némésis when he was attacked by anti-fascist activists.

His parents, through their lawyer, have urged that the march proceed “without violence” and without political slogans. Two of Deranque’s friends initiated the official call to gather.

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez declined to prohibit the event, citing the need to balance public order with freedom of expression, and promised an “extremely large police deployment.”

Six men have been charged over the fatal assault, while a parliamentary assistant linked to an LFI lawmaker faces investigation for alleged complicity.

President Emmanuel Macron has urged calm and announced a government meeting next week to address politically motivated violence.

We are now experiencing ever increasing growing pains due to the large number of websites and projects we represent. So we have just installed donation buttons on our websites and ask that you consider this when you visit them. Nothing is too small. We thank you for all your support and your considerations … (TLB)
