Debunking Herd Immunity

Greetings from chilly Iowa,

Its not even mid September & we are under a frost advisory for tonight.  This is something we don’t usually see until the end of October or November.  I have a feeling its going to be a long cold winter.

But onto our topic –

Herd immunity, we hear about this when the CDC and Dr. Paul Offit are worried about herd immunity rates going down because of so many parents opting to take advantage of their right to not vaccinate their kids.

Is herd immunity a fact or is it a myth?

A peer reviewed journal – the New England Journal of Medicine has said that herd immunity is a myth.

Lets start by taking a look at 2 different types of herds –

Which set of herds is healthier,  the ones in the feedlot or the ones in a tree lined pasture?  I lived out in the country for almost 5 years on a farm & across the driveway was a small lot filled with cows that were wading around in mud & feces up to their hocks that were constantly being shot up with antibiotics, I would say the cows in the tree lined pasture are healthier.

According to the CDC, you have to have 95% of the population up to date on their vaccines to have herd immunity.  Now think back, have you had 30 vaccines in the last 10 years?   How about 20 years?  If not, you are not up to date. More than 50% of the population has been unprotected for decades.  So, to start off most of the adult population is not up to date on their vaccines so that is a big bite in the “herd” immunity theory.

The concept of herd immunity originated when people would contract a disease naturally and it would provide lifelong protection.  This concept was then erroneously applied towards the vaccine induced immunity.  If vaccines do give a person immunity, it is usually only for two to ten years.  Not a lifelong immunity that getting, and overcoming,  a disease naturally would provide.

When we examine scientific literature vaccines only provide 30-40% immunity.  This means that more than 60% of the population had no protection.   This falls well below the required 95% that the CDC says is needed for “herd immunity.”

According to the CDC, only 1% of U.S. kid haven’t been immunized.  So, how is herd immunity being compromised supposedly among kids?

Without the herd immunity theory to fear monger parents into getting their kids vaccinated the vaccination program would implode.

The myth of herd immunity is pressuring many to be vaccinated against their will. But is there another reason why parents are being told that they have to get their kids up to date on their vaccines before entering school?   How about a financial incentive?

In the State of Illinois unless a school system has a 90% vaccination rate among their students they will receive 10% less per student until the student population is brought into compliance.

How about the vaccines that shed?   There is no herd immunity there.  Vaccines that shed for at least 28 days are the MMR, Varicella (chicken pox), Rotateq, FluMist & the oral polio vaccine.  They can shed thru the air, thru saliva & thru a persons elimination process.

We hear that vaccines have saved more lives than they have taken.  The benefit-risk ratio is always acceptable until it happens to your child.  If your child becomes autistic after a vaccine you have to care for that child physically & financially not the person that gave the vaccine.  If your child dies after a vaccine you are the one who will be grieving not the person who gave the vaccine.

Quoting Dr. Wakefield from the 2014 Autism One conference – The benefits do NOT outweigh the risks of vaccines as the risks will vary from person to person.

Will you bow to the peer pressure or stand up & say No More …
