Episode #9: Creativity Trumps Drugs – Hosted by Steve Cook, who is a writer and also the editor of TLB UK. Steve’s guest this week is the British artist and teacher, Gill Bustamante.

Gill talks with Steve about the roles played by confidence, motivation, technical skill, doing what excites you and good old fashioned hard work in becoming a successful artist.

Over the years, Gill has given a great deal of personal support to Pete Dwan’s Drug Free Kids Campaign, donating her own paintings so as to raise funds and proving wonderful illustrations for booklets and poster. You can pick up a free digital download of a Poster and the booklet Truth and Lies about Drugs.

In this interview she explains what motivated her as a mother, teacher and artist to lend that support.

She talks too about the effect of drugs on artists and artistic ability – mostly from her own experience and observation of fellow artists. She answers with a very emphatic “no” the question, “Do drugs help creativity?” and explains why.

She then reveals her own experience of what influences children can fall prey to and the vital need to protect them from those influences. She gives insight into the crucial message of the Drug Free Kids campaign, particularly the aspect of getting children winning in life and pursuing the natural high of working on and achieving their goals, with advice for parents and teachers on how to help encourage a kid do just that.
