EU Corruption Scandal Branches Out to Panamanian Bank

ER Editor: The latest ekathimerini.com report suggests that 3 accounts at the Bladex Bank in Panama, belonging to European Parliament VP (one of 14) Eva Kaili and each of her parents, have had millions paid into them from Qatar. A slightly fuller account comes from Politico.eu (MSM warning) – Greece asks Panama to check possible money transfers from Qatar to MEP Kaili.

Kaili has been in jail in Belgium throughout Christmas.

EU corruption scandal continues to grow

Apparently, the Greek anti-money laundering authority has found more suspicious dealings involving top EU officials. Its leader, Charalambos Vourliotis, has asked his counterparts in the tax haven of Panama to help investigate Eva Kaili and Francesco Giorgi’s accounts.

ATHENS – They are looking for 20 million euros, which are said to have flowed from Qatar.

The 1.5 million euros in cash confiscated in the wake of the corruption scandal appears to be the tip of the iceberg. According to the Greek media, the head of the Greek anti-money laundering authority has now turned to his colleagues in the tax haven of Panama. He asked whether 20 million euros from Qatar might have flowed into the accounts of Eva Kaili and her partner Francesco Giorgi.

Greek authorities obviously have serious doubts about the provenance of the funds.

The money is believed to be in a Bladex bank in Panama. It is said to have flowed in several tranches, including to Eva Kaili’s parents.

However, the financial institution denies being involved in the Qatargate scandal. “In the interest of transparency and the accountability that characterizes our bank, we would like to inform the public that our institution has been misrepresented as the custodian of funds of certain individuals who are the subject of investigations into a corruption case,” the bank said.

Kaili’s lawyers also say that these transfers are a “myth” but it is questionable as to whether the Greek authorities took action because of a myth.

The Greek politician had been serving as a member of the European Parliament (MEP) since 2014 and as one of fourteen vice presidents of the European Parliament from January 2022 until she was arrested and charged with corruption in December 2022.

Kaili’s arrest was the most striking action during the Qatargate operations that caused a seismic uproar in European Union politics, because she enjoyed parliamentary immunity as a sitting vice president of the EP. Belgian authorities justified it as a case of her being caught in flagrante delicto.

Kaili’s lawyers claim that the lengthy interrogation that immediately followed her arrest was conducted while Kaili was in a state of extreme shock, fear and confusion and led her to testify some things under stress, duress and mistreatment.

The Liberty Beacon Project is now expanding at a near exponential rate, and for this we are grateful and excited! But we must also be practical. For 7 years we have not asked for any donations, and have built this project with our own funds as we grew. We are now experiencing ever increasing growing pains due to the large number of websites and projects we represent. So we have just installed donation buttons on our websites and ask that you consider this when you visit them. Nothing is too small. We thank you for all your support and your considerations … (TLB)
