ER Editor: The Politico piece below leaves us with a curious question: why on earth would current President of the EU Council Charles Michel step down from his job and run for election in June 2024 as a mere MEP if he doesn’t have to?

He’s been the PM of Belgian as well as head of the EU Council, the body representing all 27 EU members. Stepping down would give the much-hated (by the globalists) Orban a chance to take the reins of the EU Council from early June until November, which is when Michel’s mandate as Council head would have finished.

This is shades of Frans Timmermans, stepping down from an EU Commissioner role to run in the Dutch elections. Who puts themselves through this climb-down willingly to run in elections they could very well lose, even if a seat is being vacated for them? It’s as if some of the top people are being pushed out. Perhaps they have been already and we’re seeing theatrics.

Naturally, Michel’s decision raised the hackles of various people who foresaw all the problems. So now Michel’s changed his mind again. Other than making the EU ‘top leadership’ look useless and incompetent once again among the political rank and file, perhaps doing a little morale-sapping, we have no idea what else could be happening.

EU boss makes election U-turn

European Council president Charles Michel has abandoned plans to contest a seat in the upcoming European Parliament elections in June. This comes amid suggestions that doing so could have led Hungary’s prime minister, Viktor Orban, a critic of aid to Ukraine, to replace him as EU Council chief.

Michel, previously Belgium’s prime minister, announced his intention to stand as an MEP for his home country three weeks ago. If he, as was widely expected, had been elected, he would have been required to leave his EU role before the official end of his term in late November.

This could have led to Orban assuming the position by default, had no successors been installed swiftly, as Hungary takes on the rotating presidency of the EU Council in July. …

European Council president makes dramatic U-turn after his candidacy sparked major backlash

European Council President Charles Michel, who faced intense criticism over his decision to leave the job to run in the upcoming EU election, is now withdrawing from the race, two officials briefed on the decision told POLITICO.

The decision comes days before European leaders are set to meet in Brussels.

“I will devote all my efforts to my current responsibilities with steadfast determination until they come to an end. I will always be a fervent advocate of a Europe that is democratic, strong, united and master of its own destiny,” Michel said in a Facebook post on Friday evening. “At the end of this mandate, I will reflect on the nature and direction of my future commitments.”
