German farmers go after Economics Minister in the middle of the night

ER Editor: German farmers are just getting going, it seems, with their protests. We covered this story almost a week ago here. The farmers are basically protesting a set of ridiculous policies designed to decimate their sector, put them out of business and leave people with less food. A no-brainer. A reminder that the German government is in a debt hole with few ways out —

German farmers protest federal tax-gouging

They went after economic minister Robert Habeck overnight on his way back from vacation. Some tweets —

Translation: Farmers’ uprising gains momentum in Germany!  150 protesting farmers stormed the ferry from which German Economics Minister and Vice-Chancellor Habeck was returning from vacation, preventing him from leaving the ship! (cf video ⤵️) Everywhere it’s boiling

Translation: #Habeck, who attracted attention at the beginning of the year for his crude track record of energy transition, is no longer taken seriously by citizens. And instead of seeking dialogue, he prefers to escape from the ferry…

Translation: Politicians who have to hide from citizens should rethink their political decisions.

More than 100 farmers had blocked the Schlüttsiel mooring quay on Thursday evening wanting to intercept the Federal Minister of Economics. They blocked the port in the district of North Frisia with more than 100 trenchers [sic]. Approx. 120 demonstrators even tried to get on the ferry after mooring.

To prevent this, the police are said to have used pepper spray.

‘The ferry with the minister had to leave’

A spokesman for the Flensburg Police Directorate to BILD: ‘We were surprised by the protest and were finally deployed with around 30 officials. But the situation could not be calmed down. The ferry with the Federal Minister of Economics finally had to leave and drive back to Hallig Hooge.’

Habeck escapes from the angry farmers! The farmers allegedly wanted to confront the minister. According to ‘Husum News’, Habeck suggested to the demonstrators that three representatives could come to him on the boat to speak to him. The farmers rejected this.

The minister’s personal protection officers rejected the counter-proposal by the demo participants that Habeck should come to the port investor [sic] because of the amount raised and the unclear security situation.

The farmers have been demonstrating against the reduction in the reduced motor vehicle tax for forestry and agriculture. The traffic light coalition government has now withdrawn the immediate cut; the abolition of the tax relief for agricultural diesel is now to come in gradually by 2026. The farmers do not consider this to be sufficient. Large nationwide protests and blockades are planned for Monday.

The situation has calmed down at the Schlüttsiel ferry terminal. The police spokesman: ‘After the ferry has returned, the farmers have moved away again.’ There were no arrests or advertisements.

However, a police spokesman told BILD that investigations into land peace, resistance and coercion are being examined.

At 1.50 a.m. the Habeck ferry finally moored again

It was only hours later and after the turmoil in the ferry port had dissolved that Minister of Economy Habeck was finally able to reach the mainland: at 1.50 a.m. his ferry moored again in Schlüttsiel. Because the water was very low, the crossing had taken significantly longer than normal.
