Johnson says he’s ‘not resigning’

Rep. Massie says he plans to co-sponsor Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s motion to vacate against Johnson

By Nicholas Ballasy

House Speaker Mike Johnson told reporters on Tuesday that he’s “not resigning” from his position as Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., predicts that a motion to vacate will eventually pass the House.

Massie revealed that he plans to co-sponsor the motion to vacate that has been filed by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga. Massie is frustrated with Johnson’s latest foreign aid plan, which currently does not include provisions to pay for it. The plan would allow separate votes on aid to Israel, Ukraine and Taiwan. Massie explained that opposition to the proposal among Republicans is growing.

Massie said the “motion is going to get called and he’s [Johnson] going to lose more votes” than former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy did in October 2023.

“When it does happen, it’s going to pass, the motion to vacate will pass,” Massie told reporters on Tuesday. “Is there something he can do now? I don’t know, possibly.”

Massie argued that the House is “steering everything toward what Chuck Schumer wants” and “there hasn’t been a change.”

To avoid going through a motion to vacate process on the House floor, the Kentucky Republican suggested that Johnson should announce he is leaving as soon as another speaker is elected, similar to what former House Speaker John Boehner did.

Johnson said he’s focused on governing and not on threats from other Republicans to oust him.

“I am not resigning and it is in my view an absurd notion that someone would bring a vacate motion when we are simply here trying to do our jobs,” Johnson said on Tuesday at a news conference. “It is not helpful to the cause. It is not helpful to the country.”

Johnson concluded, saying, “I am not concerned about this. I’m going to continue doing my job and I think that’s what the American people expect.”

The Liberty Beacon Project is now expanding at a near exponential rate, and for this we are grateful and excited! But we must also be practical. For 7 years we have not asked for any donations, and have built this project with our own funds as we grew. We are now experiencing ever increasing growing pains due to the large number of websites and projects we represent. So we have just installed donation buttons on our websites and ask that you consider this when you visit them. Nothing is too small. We thank you for all your support and your considerations … (TLB)

  1. “Johnson concluded, saying, “I am not concerned about this. I’m going to continue doing my job and I think that’s what the American people expect.”

Yes, we expect you to do your job. And your job is to change the direction we’re headed. Obviously it ain’t you.
Someone needs to step up and not be afraid to take the hit for shutting down parts of the government to get the spending bullshit straightened out.
Forget about what it might do to your re-election chances, think about what it would do to save the country! It would be a lifetime appointment to office as far as your constituency would be concerned if it was you that had the wonkas to put down the shovel and start building a ladder.

  2. I think he’s compromised. The deep state is blackmailing him with something. Either way he needs to be removed before he does more damage to our country. He’s worse than Kevin McCarthy was. I’m really disappointed that he turned out this way.
