AutismGirl17 – There is a massive amount of information available (including on this site) saying you are incorrect (no disrespect intended), including a warning to this effect on certain vaccine inserts, and research conducted by the CDC itself (and withheld from the public)! If autism is simply a genetic issue … can you please explain the massive rise in its occurrence in just the last 3 generations … which just coincidentally (??) coincides with the increased proliferation of vaccines and biotoxins such as Glyphosate. Or why America which is the most vaccinated and exposed to biotoxins such as Glyphosate, has the highest occurrence of autism on the planet?

3. I love all the pro- anti- comments about the “science is settled” arguments. There were “no links” between smoking and cancer early on either.
   SCIENCE IS NEVER SETTLED. My grandson suffers from autism. Was it the MMR vaccine? OR was it the MMR plus xyz plus abc plus def vaccine? We have almost NO studies comparing how many of these vaccines can react to each other. The variables when you start with three (MMR) combined vaccines are combined with three other vaccines (DPT) combined with … People in both camps need a time out, mostly for extremely poor science skills.

   Stating it isn’t related violates both rules. Open minds are wonderful. I read a lot of very closed minded people who have NO clue one way or the other. 15. What appalling “journalism”! The child in the vaccine court ruling didn’t have autism! He was initially diagnosed with autism, but later that was changed to encephalitis. “Technically” your quoting of his parents is accurate but you’re turning it into a bald-faced lie by suggesting to your readers that this is about autism. Encephalitis can present like autism but is not autism! Encephalitis is a rare but well-known risk from vaccines. This has nothing to do with autism or Wakefield’s research.

17. I believe the drug companies were heavily involved in debunking the findings of Dr. Wakefield. We have two children with Autism, both born in 2001 on opposite coasts of the U.S. We lives in areas where there are high concentrations of kids with Autism and Autism Spectrum disorders, including ADHD, ADD, Aspbergers, etc. etc. Growing up in the 50’s & 60’s, we had no Autism to speak of. We also didn’t have much else than the newly introduced Polio vaccine and the Smallpox vaccine. When they bombarded our kids with these 40-50 vaccines, more and more kids have gotten these disorders. My grandkids pediatrician says our country demands at last 90% COMPLIANCE by doctors in giving vaccines or they are threatened by insurance companies that it won’t be profitable for them to make them any longer. We saw the hype about the H1N1 virus SEVERAL times, and the big outbreak never occurred and we didn’t even have enough supplies for people anyway. Our country ended up sending the vaccines overseas to be given to the poor people. There was an excellent interview given by Robert Kennedy, Jr. following a meeting back around 1999 involving drug companies where it supposedly was acknowledged that there was a connection between the mercury in the vaccines, the bundled vaccines and the incidences of Autism. They were supposed to stop making them but were allowed to continue selling the vaccines still on the shelves as late as 2001. Which includes the years my relatives got Autism after numerous vaccines. Conclude what you want. Drug companies are in business to make money, even if their drugs kill people. Somebody needs to explain why their vaccines keep needing more and more and more “booster” shots. Maybe it’s because our immune systems are being destroyed and the accumulation of these drugs in our brains are creating permanent neurological disorders of all kinds.     Mom has one child who received the MMR vaccine and developed Autism. Against their wishes, they were strong armed into getting the vaccine for their next child. The kid got the vaccines and within 24 hours developed a fever. He then began neurologically decompensating. After a particular protocol for Autism, he began improving. His brother, who was also treated made 70-80% improvement. This happens all the time.

    Vaccines without doubt trigger Autism. And Autism is reversible when caught early. It’s unfortunate that society is so easily led by false propaganda. We spend more money than any other country and are the sickest of developed countries. We are told the cures are coming with each year, but 90 billion later, the treatment of cancer is an abysmal failure. Modern medicine for the treatment of chronic disease is an epic failure.     First of all the article is a put-up by someone with an very right wing axe to grind. Secondly, it is clear from all the information (and I am a professor in public health) that many were taken in by Wakefield because it was assumed that he followed the usual ethic and methodological procedures, when in fact he was on a money generating quest. This is true of families with children with autism and true of the press, and in particular the right wing press, who used the episode to support their own ideological views.
    It is a pity that the far right is so willing to use the distress of families to support their own disagreeable agenda, but that is what the situation is. In fact, it is little different from their arguments about smoking (it does no harm) or climate change (it doesn’t exist).

    As I have said before, there are 3 excellent reasons why it doesn’t make sense to make the single vaccines available:
    1. Cost would be astronomical (developing new vaccines and doing clinical trials to prove safety are very expensive to do, and drug companies make only minimal profits from them, so it is not and attractive project for them). Although these are not completely new vaccines, the testing protocol would basically have to be done form scratch, so it would be expensive.
    2. Countries such as Japan, which started giving measles single vaccine instead of MMR some time ago, have seen no reduction in rates of autism.
    3. Vaccine deniers/refusers do not believe the current overwhelming data that support MMR safety, so why would they believe similar data saying the single measles vaccine would be safe?

105. I’m 48. I didn’t have the MMR vaccine but I am autistic. My late father didn’t have the MMR jab, he was autistic. My older brother didn’t have the MMR jab either – no points for guessing he is autistic.      Now, I’m not an autism expert, and I don’t have the time to research all the details of this case,but I can tell you that in the annals of medical history, their have been many wonderful doctors, who only wanted to help and protect their patients, who nevertheless had their license to practice medicine revoked, simply because they wouldn’t “play the game” the way the “big-money-interests” wanted them to.

118. Its called Mutation, thats how any new disease appears in a genetic line, that was’nt present there prior. Genetic predisposition is a result of generations of new mutations accumulating, that gets passed on to the next generation.      E.g. If 50 people get food poisoning from eating a hamburger, it doesnt mean that the hamburger caused the food poisioning. Especially if the 51st person who had a hamburger didnt get it. It could be the ketchup, the first 50 people used , that 51st person did not use.

     With than in mind, you could easily say that the increase in radiation exposure from TV’s, and Cell phones could be the cause in the increase in ASD’s cases in the 90’s. An increase in one event, does not explicitly explain a cause in another.

     Thanks for that useful link. While the increase in ASD is causing a lot of parents much anguish, I think matters are made much worse when people realize that by not immunizing they are putting their children at risk of terrible diseases, and at the same time NOT protecting against ASD. Offering parents false hope that not immunizing will protect their children is inhumane and immoral, in my opinion. ASD is a very complicated condition, which may have multiple causes, but by now it’s pretty clear that immunization plays a very minor role if any inmost cases. Even in those cases where the immunization acts as a trigger (and even that is hard to prove conclusively) some other trigger would have probably set off the condition eventually in any case.
     My thoughts as always go out to all parents struggling with ASD, or trying to makes sense of the vaccination debate. Everybody should read as much as possible an keep an open mind. If it were only about the money, do you think doctors would immunize their own kids? I have net met a health care professional who looked at the available evidence and decided NOT to vaccinate.

     Explains that autistic children have a hypervigilant immune response to Measles virus. If the child actually contracts measles, the result would likely be the same as the vaccine.

     Again, another study about gastrointestinal disorders, diet, and children with autism. This would link the child’s diet to autism, and not vaccination.

     “The fecal flora of ASD patients contained a higher incidence of the Clostridium histolyticum group of bacteria than that of healthy children. However, the non-autistic sibling group had an intermediate level of the C. histolyticum group, which was not significantly different from either of the other subject groups.” This may suggest some type of incomplete genetic dominance for non-autism. No mention of vaccination in the abstract.

123. Hi Rebekka,

     Certainly people who are unhealthy are at higher risk from measles complications than healthy people. However, I believe the same can be said for side effects of vaccinations. There are rare known cases where children with undiagnosed conditions (such as mitochondrial deficiency) have developed encephalitis after MMR, but overall, the chance of dying from measles is much much higher than from the vaccinations (and I mean thousands of times higher).
     The role of the gut microflora in autism is extremely interesting and may be an important factor in the disease, and the same can be said for heavy metal poisoning. However, there has not been mercury in the MMR vaccine for years, and the rate of autism is still going up, and there is no evidence that the MMR vaccine is affecting gut bacteria.
     To me the safest thing is still to get the vaccines, but I wish everyone the best of health no matter what they do.

124. I wonder about the death rate from measles. Is it perfectly healthy people who contract measles and die, or is it people whose health is already compromised who suffer the extreme reactions that you and others write about? I thought about this after reading a newspaper article describing a child who died — but the child was terminally ill to begin with. When I was a child in the fifties, people got measles and got over it with no ill effects The real problem it seems to me is eliminating the normal way of getting measles, mumps and rubella, particularly rubella. When you mess with the immune system via vaccines you are opening a Pandora’s box of potential side effects that may not necessarily show up all at once — although too often they do. By compromising a child’s gut flora, which the vaccines do, you leave them susceptible to illnesses such as ear infections and asthma. The rate of these illnesses in our childhood population is staggering.

     Yes, same Chas here. OK I was a bit lazy because I didn’t look up the accepted complication rates for MMR. Mild reactions such as fever and headache are common, since the vaccine is a lives virus (although, as you consistently fail to mention, it is carefully attenuated virus which is designed to be too weak to do much damage to most people). Moderate reactions (such as seizures due to high fever) occur at about 1 in 10,000 cases (i.e. less than 1/10 as many as people who DIE from measles). While these reactions can be scary, they are not life-threatening, and generally do no permanent damage as far as can be determined. Encephalitis, which is quite serious, and has a high risk of permanent brain damage, occurs in less than 1 in a million cases. If we were to assume that 1 out 3 of these children who get encephalitis die, then the death rate from the MMR vaccine would be something like 1 in 3 million, which compares to about 1 in 300 for measles. As you know, measles is highly contagious, and before vaccines pretty much everybody got it sooner or later. So, in short, the disease is 10 thousand times more likely to kill you than the vaccine. That is many times more likely (as I said).
     If you want to see what happens when you stop giving MMR, you just have to look at japan, who dropped the requirement in 1993. Since then, there have been hundreds of unnecessary childhood deaths from measles, and NO decrease in rates of autism.
     The evidence is vastly overwhelming that the MMR vaccine does much much more good than harm. It’s a matter of numbers, although that isn’t any consolation to people who children become ill. Also, my statement about the immorality of not vaccinating is because you people people at risk who are unable to receive the vaccine, like babies under 1 year of age and immuno-compromised folks.
     Also, your statement that you never knew anyone who died from measles is absurd… at a death rate of 0.3% you would on average need to know hundreds and hundreds of measles suffers to personally know somebody who died. I find it rather shocking that your sister almost does and yet you are so cavalier about the illness. Thank God she was OK, but what about the people who weren’t? Just because you did not personally know any measles victims does not mean they didn’t exist, and that they didn’t suffer and die. it is a nasty disease, nobody needs to get it, and nobody should get it.
     The autism link simply hasn’t been proven, and the conspiracy theories about Big Pharma are just that. Look at the recent vaccine-induced narcolepsy outbreak that occurred in Finland a few years ago from the H1N1 flu vaccine. It was already known that some Finns carry a gene that makes them susceptible to narcolepsy, but for some reason the flu vaccine seems to exacerbate the condition in same people, which was a surprising finding. The government looked into it, did some some research with the pharma company who made the shot, and admitted that there was a problem, and compensated the victims. Finland also has the MMR vaccine, and also has autism- why would they let big pharma get away with that one? It’s because if the MMR is involved, it is such a s weak effect hat it simply can not be scientifically proven. Weak effects, especially when there is a combination of causes, can be hard to tease out, which is why I never say that MMR has no ill effects, simply that the link between MMR and autism can not be proven.
     Finally, I will reiterate my previous assertion that the best way to get rid of the measles vaccine is to get rid of measles BY VACCINATING EVERYONE. it worked for smallpox (now totally gone- no vaccine required) it worked for Polio (now almost stamped out- no vaccine required in most places) and IT WILL WORK for measles. People need to be convinced of this, for their own good and the welfare of everyone.
     I realize that many people are suffering from the devastating effects of autism in their families, and nobody likes to hear that there is no known cause, no cure, and no much help in general. Given what we know, blaming MMR makes as much sense as the Salem which trials. I hope we learn more soon before too many more innocent unimmunized children die of the measles.

     I’m not against vaccinations as part of a universal scheme to protect the populus, however, unlike any other vaccine of any description, MMR (I iterate, ONLY MMR) has been the subject to a ruthless campaign of state bullying against any waverers or dissenters, the worse example being the threat of potentially denying a child a state education (the most fundamental of all human rights) if they haven’t had these viruses (however dilute) forced into their tiny bodies.

     That, my dear chap, surely has to be far more morally reprehensible! Even you can appreciate that.

     Ironically, it is my own unshaken belief that the % of people suffering detrimental/permanent side-effects from Measles is very much equal to the % of those suffering similar from the vaccine. The main difference is that the former only occurs should the individual contract the disease – the latter is being forced on the populous by supposed “health” authorities.

     Interestingly, in your presentation of a counter-argument along these lines to Jill, you are able to quote a statistic for the former (3 in 1000 fatalities from Measles), but rely on conjecture for the latter “many times lower”.

     I knew many, many people who contracted Measles when we were kids (my own sister was so ill, the doctors put my parents on possible death alert!!) – yet I can genuinely tell you that I never knew or met any of those that suffered any permanent health defects.

     I have met (and you are now reading messages from) parents whose children have now suffered permanent health defects NOT from contracting Measles, but from having the virus injected into them along with 2 others!

     As I have said before, if I so much as think I have an allergy to penicillin (which has been around for nearly 100 years) can you imagine a hospital forcing me to take it should I have a bad infection. The very least they would provide a test to ascertain whether the allergy was present before prescribing it!

     If these is even the smallest risk of detrimental side-effects, MMR simply cannot be (1) continually claimed to be 100% – still happening!!; (2) forced onto parents under threat of punitive measures.

     Ironically, were the authorities to stop (1) and (2), I could guarantee that the uptake of MMR would be extremely increased!

     while I agree that it would be nice to have a single jab for only measles, I can’t see it happening because it would be very expensive to bring it back to the market, and the people who are afraid of MMR would be equally afraid of the measles jab and refuse that too. You would end up spending hundreds of millions and only satisfy a few people, such as yourself, who sit in the middle ground between people who are fine with MMR and those who are total refusers.
     I firmly believe that children who are susceptible to ASD will be triggered by something whether they get shots or not. If it’s not MMR, it will be a peanut, a cat a pollen grain, some lead based paint they eat, or any other thing or combination of things that triggers an immune response (or whatever is really happening with ASD). My prediction is that if we don not figure out the underlying cause of the susceptibility, we will just end up with a bunch of autistic kids who also get sick with the measles, mumps and rubella. Time will tell, as there are now large groups of people (like the Texas megachurch) who are refusing vaccines. It is morally reprehensible to not vaccinate children “just to see what happens” but these people are in effect doing a giant controlled experiment. Sadly, I think we’ll find out that the refusers have just as much ASD as the general population… we will know soon, in a few years I guess.

129. Good luck then, when your son gets measles… Between the years 1987 and 2000, the case fatality rate across the United States was 3 measles-attributable deaths per 1000 cases, or 0.3%. Note this is in the U.S. with presumably good medical care. The rate of complications form the MMR vaccine, although definitely not zero, is many many times lower. The first few people who refused MMR vaccines were protected by the many many people who were immunized. Now there are so many people refusing that anybody who doesn’t get the shots is taking a much bigger risk than was the case 10 years ago.

     My advice is, if you don’t vaccinate your kid, be sure and ask around at your school, church, daycare, etc., and DON’T let your kid hang around with unvaccinated people! You can not just keep away from people who are already sick, since they will be highly contagious for some days before showing symptoms.
     The alternative, of course, is to try and get your kid infected (as folks used to do with chicken pox) to “get it over with”. The plus side of this is that the survival rate for kids with measles is higher than adults. The down side is the risk of blindness or death, but hey, maybe you’ll be “lucky”.
     Also, at some point, perhaps when he is 8 or 9, you should explain to him that he is not vaccinated, and at risk for this horrible disease. It is quite bad to get measles as an adult, so he might want to get himself immunized rather than remain at risk.

     Life in inherently risky, and sadly there is no way to guarantee that your son will never get ill. To my way of thinking, you just have to study the facts and try to minimize the risks. Despite what the shouty people say, not getting immunized is more dangerous than getting the MMR shot, especially since so many people are now refusing the shots.

136. Like posted earlier, the link between vaccines and autism might not be necessarily MMR, but the amount of vaccines infants receive between the ages of 0 and 2. Many of those vaccines (but not MMR) contain mercury or aluminum as preservatives. The whole weekend i spend on linking from here to there, googling all the main items on the subject etc. Now, I allready knew that the alternative media are seriously falling into the same trap as mainstream. 140. BCG and Varicella (chickenpox) vaccines are live attenuated forms of the infectious agent, neither are adjuvanted (i.e. do not contain any of the metal adjuvants). Unless TB or chickenpox directly cause or lead to the development of autism. Your argument arkofgod is invalid. (I am a PhD researcher who studies the safety and effectiveness of vaccines. I am personally working to make more effective and safer vaccines for the developing world.)

     Also, the vaccine industry is not a money making enterprise. Between the very high cost of clinical trials (Phase 1-3), which can easily be in the hundreds of millions, and the very small price paid to the doctor’s office by insurance companies, most of the cost is subsidized by your tax dollars to keep the population as a whole protected.

     No offense, but I personally believe that the very small risk of side-effects which may or may not contribute to brain damage (fever, metal accumulation due to genetic and environmental factors, or brain swelling) and therefore contribute to the development of ASD, is a small price to pay compared to where we were (i.e. high mortality and serious ailments like paralysis from Polio) before we started world-wide vaccination campaigns.

     A better use of everyone’s time here would be to campaign our governments and funding entities for safer, more effective adjuvants (which are often required to get the immune response we so desire), temperature stable and needle-free vaccines (so that those in the developing world can share in our accomplishment of nearly eradicating these diseases in our privileged countries), and remind ourselves that vaccinations only work if 90% of the population gets them as directed. Imagine if these diseases suddenly mutated and we had to start over with our research and vaccinations. No one wants that.

     Whilst I have no direct answer, I firmly believe that a case should be taken, and suggest that it should be a class action against the Government’s Health Authority of whichever country you reside.

     A few years ago I joined, and ended up running a fledgling campaign against a local authority in London that very rapidly became subscribed by over 6,000 people that all clubbed together to mount a legal challenge in the High Court. In short, I have much experience in how these things should be handled – but also know how much of a drain on one’s personal health, wealth & immediate family they can be – but that shouldn’t deter when the cause is just!

     Ironically, I promised my wife I would never do it again EXCEPT if it was a challenge against the wretched totalitaristic attitude meted out by Government’s regarding this one & only drug – MMR.

     If you are serious about fighting for your daughter, first thing you must do is write down every detail of your daughter’s story in a clear, chronological order. Then you can ask others to do the same.

     Seems that there are many on this forum that would be keen to hear it. And remember, for every one person that writes a contribution here, there are 10 others that read them but feel awkward about expressing their own thoughts.

     If you’ve read my comments here, you will get a sense of how outraged I am about not only how this drug was forced on innocent children; but also how it replaced a very effective single jab that was removed from public access; and that because one individual doctor dared to express some concern, he was very publicly destroyed totally disproportionately.

     I think you make a lot of good points. I agree that somewhere is your long list of possible contributing factors lie the real underlying causes of increased ASD. The hard part is to figure out exactly which factors are causing problems for which kids. What if one or two environmental contaminants are the primary cause, and vaccinations are just one of many triggers that could set of a cascade of responses leading to neurological problems? I think it would be painful to shut down the vaccination programs and then find out that sensitive individuals will develop problems with or without the shots 8and a lot of people die form the illnesses they would have been protected from). I guess as a society we are actually doing that experiment now- there are enough people refusing vaccinations for their kids that within a few years it should be possible to analyze whether it makes a difference down the road in terms of new cases of ASD.
     One hundred years ago, many people also had lousy diets and lots of environmental pollution (just read a Charles Dickens novel, for example). Funny that back then you rarely saw these kinds if disorders… maybe people were just dying off from cholera, tuberculosis and a dozen other diseases before they had a chance to develop neurological problems. On the other hand, we have different pollutants than we did back then, and it wouldn’t surprise me if we eventually identify a few things in today’s environment that are especially nasty. It is hard to do testing for long term toxicity that has subtle effects on complicated systems like our brain.
     In any case, it certainly doesn’t hurt to try to avoid as many artificial substances as possible in everyday life. Whether that includes the small amounts of potentially harmful substances found in some vaccines is a pretty hard question to even think about. I don’t have a vested interest in people getting their kids vaccinated or not, but it’s a bit scary to me to think about the number of kids who would get sick if nobody vaccinated, and the total number of people who would die or suffer from serious complications form these mostly preventable illnesses. All in all it is not a fun topic to think about, and I don’t envy the people who have to make public policy around these issues.

148. I do not believe that vaccines CAUSE autism in and of themselves, but I do not believe that vaccines are innocent either. I think that what everyone is missing is the EPIGENETIC cause of autism. (google it). Genes express themselves according to environmental stimuli. It’s not so simple as genes vs. environmental causes. If it was genetic alone, we wouldn’t see the numbers rising so sharply so fast, sorry.

     More and more children are born today already pre-polluted with over 200 different chemicals, from BPA to pesticides to fire retardants and more, damaging genes in utero. Many are also born with severe nutrient deficiencies from BOTH parents maintaining a crappy standard American diet, again damaging genes in utero. And even more than that are born with poor gut flora and intestinal permeability problems, leading to colic, GERD, increasing food allergies and other digestive problems from birth.

     Now add to this a whole bunch of vaccines that contain EVEN MORE toxic chemicals, like aluminum, formaldehyde, Tween, polysorbate 80, ethylene glycol, etc. and you have a serious recipe for a major vaccine reaction, such as autism, encephalitis, epilepsy and more.

     This explains why some kids are fine after vaccination, while others aren’t. With all the toxins and crap food we ingest, we are creating weaker and weaker people with each generation.

     Thanks for your comments. A few points:
     1. I don’t think the peanut analogy is perfect. People can forgo nuts without any medical consequence to themselves or others (assuming there is something else around to eat 🙂 People who get sick because they are not immunized are a burden to the rest of society, and can spread disease to other un-immunized people. If it were to be determined that an individual could not safely be immunized (for example the Poling girl with the mitochondrial disorder) then that person would be at much greater risk if a large number of other unvaccinated people were around. In my opinion it is therefore critical to identify the at-risk individuals, and treat them separately (different vaccine, different schedule, or as a last resort no vaccine) and make sure the great majority of the people are immunized so that general population is safe. The chances of getting encephalitis from measles mumps or rubella is much higher than the chance of getting it from the mmr vaccine (although I can understand how that’s not a very compelling argument if your child gets sick).
     2. I think single vaccines in principle are a great idea . I imagine the reason they are not available is simply economic. The testing process for new vaccines is incredibly expensive (hundreds of millions) as you have to do a hell of a lot of testing to find the real frequency of rare adverse reactions. A drug company would only go down that path if they had a guarantee form the government that the vaccine would be purchased in huge quantities. However, the government has already committed to buying huge amounts of MMR vaccine, maybe explaining the crazy quote about the national immunization policy. In my opinion, this is due to: 1, government outsourcing vaccine development to private companies and 2: people being unwilling to spend tax money on the welfare of children. Seems crazy to me but there you have it.

     As we know from smallpox (and hopefully soon polio) we can wipe these diseases from the face of the earth is we make a concerted effort- not just immunizing everybody, but making sure we know why the immunizations occasionally backfire and minimizing the risk for everyone. It has been a big surprise to me over the last 30 or so years that people’s allergies to things like nuts and possibly vaccine components have really been skyrocketing, and nobody knows why (although there are some compelling theories around). It now seems that a good vaccine is essentially now a fast moving target, and much more challenging than it was assumed to be 20 or 30 years ago. Hopefully people will realize the value of a good vaccine (which is to eradicate the disease completely, so that in the future no vaccination is required) and be willing to pay for it. And note that for a big pharma company, a great vaccine that wiped out a disease would be bad for business- as soon as the disease is gone you have no more customers 🙂 I agree with you that this is all about money, and I believe vaccines should be taken away form companies and left to government labs whose mission is to promote childhood welfare and not make obscene profits for their fat CEOs.

150. Dear Chas, thanks for an excellent contribution. Can I pick up on a couple of issues.

     Problem is that, (as I have highlighted previously) when the medical authorities were presented with a similar “small number”/”minority” of people sensitive to nuts, and food products with nuts in them, their reaction was to force the “majority” to protect them. Food labelling on packaging & in restaurants was forced, by legislation, to warn if nuts (or traces of) were present.

     Yet, with MMR and its undoubtedly “small number”/”minority” of people sensitive, the attitude is so wildly reversed that, rather than have the “majority” protect them, the “minority” are being, at best, branded as “irresponsible”, and at worse, in some area being threatened with disqualification from getting a state education for NOT taking this particular vaccine.

     In short, you rightly state: “Vaccines are safe for most people now”, but it is the word “most” as opposed to “all” that is so critical.

     More importantly though, I feel you personally have omitted a crucial point.

     You mention the mass vaccine programs that eliminated both smallpox & polio, yet you fail to mention that there was also a Measles vaccination back in the 50’s & 60’s that virtually eradicated this disease as well.

     Now, as a biologist, you will know better than me, but from what I read, the most dangerous of the 3 viruses is Measles. In my 40+ years here in the UK, I have never heard of an “outbreak” of either Mumps or Rubella. I know of individuals who have contracted these, but without ever causing any alarm amongst the local populus.

     The question I feel so many anxious parents are asking was actually very eloquently and succinctly posed by ex-MP Ann Widdecombe:- “IF parents are refusing to vaccinate their children with the combined MMR because they are afraid of autism and the state is really concerned about an epidemic of measles then the solution is obvious: make the single vaccines available to all instead of just to those who can afford them.”

     To me, this gets to the crux of the matter. Even if you remove the phrase “…afraid of autism…” and replace it with “…afraid of the possible (and already recorded) plethora of nasty side-effects…”, this simple question is continually ignored by the medical authorities that are supposed to be protecting our children’s health.

     ARE THE STATE ‘REALLY CONCERNED”??

     If the state was properly concerned, they would reintroduce the single Measles vaccine. When I suggested this in a letter to the Health Secretary, the response I received was very straight to the point: “Currently, there are no single measles, mumps or rubella vaccines licensed for use in the UK.” and later, “Manufacturers are entirely free to submit a product licence application to the MHRA, which would be objectively evaluated for safety, quality and efficacy independent from national immunisation policy.”

     and therein is the rub, “independent from national immunisation policy.”

     As you mention yourself, vaccine have a small profit margin with governments controlling the price. Which manufacturer, in their right mind, would produce a “safer” vaccine that ran alongside an alternative being used as “national immunisation policy.”?

     Alas, as others here have alluded to, this was always about money, never about children’s health.

     First off, I am a biologist, but with no ties to big pharma and no kids. I can’t even imagine how heartbreaking it must be for parents whose children suffer from ASD, but I don’t think it helps matters if you blindly believe either side in this controversy. The immune system is incredibly complex, and so is the neurological development of young children. Anybody who makes a blanket statement that vaccines are 100% safe or 100% dangerous is oversimplifying the case drastically.
     From a scientific point of view, there are simply too many unknowns at this time to state unequivocally that vaccines are or are not responsible for the vast majority of cases of ASD. Many things have changed in our environment in the past 20-30 years, and while I certainly understand the desire to assign blame, or at least identify a clear cause, it simply is not possible at this time, in my opinion. There are certainly rare cases where there is clear evidence of vaccines doing harm, so as the case of the multimillion dollar Poling settlement mentioned above (this one:

     However, if you dig into the story, it clearly states that the poor child had a serious undiagnosed mitochondrial disorder (which is, actually, a genetic problem) and the vaccines exacerbated what was already a grave condition. It does not suggest, however, that most people would have a problems with the vaccines, and it is misleading to present it as evidence that somehow scientists are now “admitting” that vaccines are dangerous.
     I am certain that as more research is done, there will be more associations found with a small number of people who are extremely sensitive to some compounds in some vaccines, and that gradually these substances will be removed from vaccines, and/or people tested for the sensitivity. Vaccines are safe for most people now, and will more more safe in the future.
     Meanwhile, I think it worth thinking about that smallpox has been eliminated from the environment (except stored in a few labs) ONLY because of massive vaccination programs. Yes, some people became ill after getting the vaccine, but if people refused to get their children vaccinated, then we would still be suffering from a horrible contagious disease. We now no longer need to give this vaccine to anyone, and nobody gets sick. People who refuse vaccines become a reservoir for the pathogens, and can endanger everybody’s health. Polio is also very close to being eliminated (nobody in the west needs this shot any longer, but the disease persists in some developing countries) but efforts are being hampered by unfounded suspicion (especially in the Muslim world) that the vaccines are some sort of conspiracy aimed at harming rather than helping.
     One final point (before that one person calls me a vaccine whore 🙂 vaccines are a lousy profit generator. They are hard to develop and validate, and governments often control the price that can be charged. This is why there are very few companies actually willing to make vaccines these days. The real whores are making lifestyle drugs such as boner pills and cholesterol and blood pressure meds that would be unnecessary for many people if only they had better diets and got more exercise.
     All that being said, my heart goes out to all who are struggling with ASD, and I hope these difficult questions get answered soon so our kids and grandkids don’t have to go through all this.

     Thank you for your comment! I am looking for the truth too and I am puzzled with what I find… I am certainly no extremist, but I feel uncomfortable with the too adamant claims that vaccines are completely safe. We obviously know it’s not true – they can produce serious side effects, which does not detract from the fact that they also may protect from very serious diseases. I am just trying to understand what the controversy is about. I have been researching articles for a little while now, but probably not long enough to have found very convincing ones. Actually, the more I search, the more confused I get. I can’t find very convincing articles in support of a link between MMR and autism (like you noted), but I have found many, which suggest a link between heavy metal poisoning from vaccines (aluminum and mercury) and autism spectrum disorder symptoms (list follows, and I think there are more). Only one of them also suggests a possible link between MMR and autism (acetaminophen? sounds random). However, I am starting to wonder if the relationship between MMR and ASD symptoms is a coincidental one. Looking at the recommended vaccination schedule for children between 0 and 2 yrs, we see that MMR is injected after a good series of vaccines possibly containing aluminum and/or mercury, and also with second of third presentations of those vaccines (HepB, HIb, PCV, Dtap). I am wondering if, according to studies suggesting that repeated and cumulated exposure to aluminum and mercury may be linked to ASD symptoms, symptoms may appear in predisposed individuals after MMR because the accumulation of toxins reaches a critical level in that time window when the vaccine is introduced.

To all the non believers, that vaccines do cause autism, and the drug companies denying the cause of autism, let me tell you another denial from drug companies….are you aware of the millions of Fluoroquinolone Toxicity Victims, well the drug makers have been denying this damage as well for over 30 years. 156. Many of the cited studies supporting Wakefield’s claims were conducted by Wakefield himself. Out of those not conducted by him, I’ve been through half of them now and none give a uniform “support” of his findings. They specify characteristics of autism that could, if other circumstances are also in place, link it to the vaccines. But these other circumstances are not described.
     Whatever you believe, the important thing is that you do your research critically and with the aim of learning, not of confirming what you wish to believe.

162. For those here that still think MMR is totally safe, and the even stranger ones who think it should be “mandatory”, perhaps you could answer me one simple question.

     At my kids school, of the 1200 students there are 4 that are known to have an allergy to nuts. To put that statistically, that’s 0.33% that have the allergy, or more positively, 99.66% that are totally fine when it comes to nuts.

     This hasn’t prevented the local authority from banning all 1200 students from bringing nut-related products to school (personally, I think that’s a very responsible attitude from said local authority).

     Yet, when it comes to MMR, (and ironically it is indeed ONLY MMR) even with the multitude of adverse reactions already recorded, if one dares to suggest any concerned that their child has proved to be, or may prove to be allergic to having 3 live viruses pumped into them, the authorities brand you a “heretic”, or “namby-pamby”.

     Let’s say, for argument sake, the number of children NOT having any adverse reaction to MMR is 99.66%, can someone please explain why such an opposing attitude is taken by the authorities??

     I’d wager everyone here knows someone who is allergic to penecillin. Can you imagine that person being forced to take it by any modern medical practitioner? Of course not. I wonder how many people suffered over how many years before the medical establishment was prepared to accept that some people, some where could be allergic to penicillin,

     And many here will never forget Thalidomide – labelled totally “safe” in the 50’s and early 60’s! Need I say more?

163. The research article cited as “evidence” for a link between autism and the MMR vaccince does not mention the MMR vaccine a SINGLE time. Unfortunately most people are not aware of the strong body of evidence demonstrating no association between autism and vaccines nor do most people understand what a vaccine actually is, you are NOT giving small doses of a disease, you are giving killed or attenuated virus or you are giving a bacterial antigen, none of these products can cause disease in an immunocompetent individual. For those who argue that financial incentive is the reason vaccines are given with high frequency they obviously do not understand the insurance system. Having a child come back to the clinic multiple times for a vaccine series is much more profitable to the clinic and expensive for the parent as opposed to multiple vaccines in the same visit. Unfortunately most Americans cannot remember the polio epidemic, or the flu pandemic of 1918, which approached a 50% mortality rate, or smallpox, or respiratory muscle paralysis due to tetanus, or a number of other potentially FATAL diseases because we vaccinate for them. Vaccines save lives. Mr. Wakefield has spread inaccurate information leading to the death of children who should have been vaccinated. (He is not a doctor his license has been revoked; someone said disbarred but that term is reserved for lawyers). BTW, Austin/Travis county (where Mr. Wakefield lives) has the highest rate of Whooping Cough (pertussis) in the United States…we have a vaccine for that if anyone is interested.

166. Wakefield did not falsify data and he did not order the invasive procedures and the part of his team that did in fact did have ethical approval for the very relevant tests. The so called financial conflicts came along after his data had been obtained for the 1998 paper. Go spend a dollar and by his book Callous Disregard read it and get educated on the correct facts not those pushed by the journalist and the media barons with serious financial interests in the pharmaceutical companies supplying the vaccines.

168. Im pleased to know that finally the truth is being recognised, childrens health have been put to risk and for whos sake? My daughter was given the MMR vaccine when she was only 3 months old, apparently by mistake! all i can say about it is that since then, she screamed with coelic, never slept and had diahrroe up to 17 times a day. Shes in pain 24/7 and Doctors thought i was being a fussy mum! at the age of 10 she was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis which is a bowel disease she will endure for life. shes 15 now, and sooner or later she will have to have her bowel removed as theres no cure for it and no improvement on the illness! This has caused many problems to us has a family, my husband tried to take his life due to see how ill his daughter has been over the years, hes never recovered, financially supporting a family and taking time off due to her illness, her education has suffered due to it, trying to deal with schools proving she had an actual illness and that she wasnt being mistreat at home. etc. no ending to it!

     I have read the abstracts of the two articles you suggest with interest.

     On the first one (Singh et all.) I would interpret that the article tend to prove that autistic children present an abnormal immune reaction which (among other things) produces abnormal antibodies against myelin basic protein (MBP) and against one of the components of the vaccine – related to measles by the way. There is no link that says that the vaccine caused the immune disease just that those children suffering from autism might react more strongly against one protein of the measles vaccine.

     The second article is interesting as it tries to hypothesize how the vaccine could cause autism. But for now it’s just an hypothesis and no evidence yet from what I could read. Unless you have the full article available?

     Hence I am still looking for the evidence and willing to read more peer reviewed articles.

176. Or unless you count the people that die from diseases like chicken pox (yes, it can happen), measles, small pox (which still exists in some countries), and whooping cough. Unless you count the women who come into contact with people who have rubella and then later become pregnant without knowing that they are carrying the disease and end up having babies with severe congenital problems (blindness, heart problems to name a few) or even suffer miscarriage due to the rubella virus. Unless you count the people who are crippled for life from polio. Unless you’ve never experienced shingles – a painful disease in and of itself which is a direct result of getting chicken pox. The disease lives on in your neurons and flares up later in life. I never had a chicken pox vaccine – I got chicken pox in 2nd grade. I experienced a bout of shingles at age 33/34 that was so painful I wanted to die. So no – you won’t experience vibrant health without vaccines, nor will you with them. But your risk of paralysis from polio, or death from whooping cough and small pox is greatly reduced. I realize that you’re strongly against vaccines, but there are some reasons to get them and everyone has to weigh their own risks. You calling people vaccine whores doesn’t really help the debate or further the science in any way, shape or form. Name-calling is not really acceptable adult behavior.

177. Thanks to everyone who’s pointed out the gaping holes in this article. I went to the PLOS paper cited in the story and as far as I can tell it has NOTHING TO DO with vaccines. If you want to be taken seriously, you have to do better than this. Stringing together the statements of one (controversial) doctor, asserting that two court decisions “prove” the vaccine-autism link (in fact, no such admission was made), and throwing in a scientific study about gene expression in autistic children. The dots don’t connect. This is sloppy, sloppy writing that doesn’t deserve the term journalism, investigative, or research.

178. This is certainly plausible. After all, it’s been shown that maternal oral health has a direct impact on a fetus’s oral health, to the point that if a mom has bad oral hygiene it can be demonstrated that her child is more likely to be susceptible to cavities and oral health problems.

179. Thimerosol has been removed from MMR vaccines in the US for almost a decade now. If thimerosol were a direct causal link to autism, why would the number of children getting MMRs with no thimerosol and yet still being diagnosed with autism increase? What about the children who don’t get vaccinated and are still diagnosed with autism? Conceivably we’d have no causal link, right? Whilst the jury is clearly still out on whether MMR can ACTUALLY be linked to autism, following the Welsh outbreak, and another “Brian Deer expose” in the Sunday Times claiming that “Babies will be born deaf due to parents NOT using MMR”, I decided to write to the UK Health Secretary, Jeremy Hunt directly.

     Putting conspiracy theories very much to one side, there were two aspects of the UK Government’s MMR campaign that just didn’t sit right with me:

     1) in the knowledge that nature itself cannot produce any foodstuff that is 100% to every human being, the persistent claim that a vaccine could be injected into a very young child without any risk of side-effect

     2) that a medical practitioner (as I still view Dr Wakefield to be) could be so utterly vilified for daring to suggest that “more research” needs to be conducted – ironically, mostly at the hands of News International’s journalist Brian Deer!

     The answer from Mr Hunt’s department was extremely useful and provided me with all the information I needed to make an informed decision thus:-

     So, using this guide, I duly visited this Government website and entered the drug MMR in the search box.

     Personally, the most prevalent and worrying insight is the fact that only one pharmceutical has the clear monopoly on producing this drug (a point raised by Wakefield very early on)…that is to say worrying BEFORE you read all the other documented side-effect.

     The side-effect that I found most disturbing was “Deafness” especially after Mr Brian Deer had claimed “Deafness” resulting from NOT taking this drug.

     Quite simply, giving MMR to your child is literally playing Russian Roulette with their health and future. Sorry chaps, not something I’d ever do with my kids!

The Lancet paper in question, showed a novel bowel disease in these children with autism. All this article is saying is that the Wake Forrest University research confirmed the findings of the Lancet Article that Wakefield published. And that finally, parents are actually winning their court cases for their vaccine injuries that have resulted in autism.

While it is true that researchers are finding links between bowel disease and Autism, there is still no sound scientific evidence to support a vaccine-autism link. Just because one of Wakefield’s hypothesis (intestinal disorders) has some validity does not automatically mean that the other one (vaccines) does as well. Also, a US Court really has no jurisdiction in making scientific links – that is for the SCIENTISTS and RESEARCHERS to do in PEER REVIEWED journals. This article also fails to mention that Wakefield falsified data, subjected children to invasive procedures without the approval of the institutional review board, and had financial conflicts of interest.

Mojabi was awarded the compensation claims because of “Petitioners specifically asserted that Ryan “suffered a Vaccine Table Injury, namely, an encephalopathy” (p.2) as a result of his receipt of the MMR vaccination on December 19, 2003.” and NOT because of the parents’ claim that it caused autism spectrum disorder. WOWWW….what a way to misrepresent and distort the facts of the case.

     Did you even READ the decision (in full) and did you UNDERSTAND what the decision said?

     They weren’t awarded because of the link between MMR and ASD (which, by the way, if you can tell me how an immunological response is able to alter or impact a neurological developmental response, then you know something more than the hundreds and thousands of doctors that have studied this. Where did you go to med school? I want to know because if you are able to make that kind of connection, that’s gotta be one heck of a top-notch med school to be able to train you to do what no one else in the ENTIRE PROFESSION has been able to prove thus far.

231. I have been told autism children are born with it and the parents are the carrier, which I believe. All my children and grandchildren are just fine. Not 1 person in either family sides (husband and my side) have autism. I have noticed the children of autistic brothers or sisters are ADDHD or just ADDAD.

235. Try this out — perhaps the MMR does not directly cause autism — perhaps it causes severe gastrointestinal distress in a certain population of children with compromised gut flora. The gastrointestinal distress in turn causes leaky gut, depriving the brain of necessary nutrients — resulting in not just autism, but a variety of mental diseases as well as the gastrointestinal disease. As people’s diets depend more and more on depleted food, as people take more and more antibiotics, birth control pills, etc., gut flora is further and further compromised and that gets passed along to the next generation. By this theory a child with healthy gut flora would not end up with autism after vaccination — but with each generation fewer and fewer babies have healthy gut flora.

236. Ashley, Dr Wakefield’s partner in the original article has been villified and reinstated in the UK. Dr Wakefield in in the US now and it is a different court system. He is in the middle a court battle here. Please check the current status of your “facts” before you post. thankyou.

241. If you actually READ the paper cited you will notice that the authors do not even MENTION vaccines. They didn’t study them at all! This is a truly appalling piece of journalism.

     They found a link between inflammatory bowel conditions and autism spectrum disorders but acknowledge that this is correlation not causation. They don’t comment on possible causes at all.

     This paper does not vindicate Andrew Wakefield in any way. This article needs to be withdrawn and apologized for. It is wholly misleading.

242. I don’t know about your countries, but here in the Netherlands the Dr. would stand for him having succeeded in writing a thesis gaining his doctorate. A private physician would be addressed as doctor, but not have the Dr in front of his name, which is a qualification as to further university studies then a private physician has done. His license to practice might have been revoked and that possibly reversed again at this time, but unless he has been found to have committed plagiarism the Dr should still stand. He is not the only doctor attacked as soon as proves their alternative findings/methods work. Look up dr Burzynski at YouTube and there are many more. Then again there are doctors loosing their license, who just move some km’s over the border and start practicing again overhere in Europe. Doctors who are responsible for unnecessary deaths of patients even.

243. I love the way the Liberty Beacon articles mislead their readers for the sake of the conspiracy and avoid the vast majority of respected evidence to advance and repeat the fringe conspiracy believers.

     The video at the beginning of this article, for instance, talks about the relationship between autism and intestinal diseases. Nowhere does it even hint that there is a relationship between vaccinations and either autism or intestinal diseases.

     The conspiracy nutters have been told over and over that the Pharmacologists who work for the vaccine manufacturers are doing it for the money. I just cannot figure how adding ‘toxins’ to the vaccines, apparently aimed at maiming and killing babies and children, is a great way to make money.

     Then I am asked to “follow the money”. Well I did and read the following article:

     In February 2004, controversy resurfaced when Wakefield was accused of a conflict of interest. The Sunday Times reported that some of the parents of the 12 children in the study in The Lancet were recruited via a UK lawyer preparing a lawsuit against MMR manufacturers, and that the Royal Free Hospital had received £55,000 from the UK’s Legal Aid Board (now the Legal Services Commission) to pay for the research.[53] Previously, in October 2003, the board had cut off public funding for the litigation against MMR manufacturers.[54] Following an investigation of The Sunday Times allegations by the UK General Medical Council, Wakefield was charged with serious professional misconduct, including dishonesty.[55] In December 2006, the Sunday Times further reported that in addition to the money they gave the Royal Free Hospital, the lawyers responsible for the MMR lawsuit had paid Wakefield personally more than £400,000, which he had not previously disclosed.[56]

     Twenty-four hours before the 2004 Sunday Times report, The Lancet responded to the investigation in a public statement, describing Wakefield’s research as “fatally flawed”. The Lancet’s editor said he believed the paper would have been rejected as biased if the peer reviewers had been aware of Wakefield’s conflict of interest.[57] Ten of Wakefield’s twelve co-authors of the paper in The Lancet later published a retraction of an interpretation:[58] The section of the paper retracted read as follows:
     “Interpretation. We identified associated gastrointestinal disease and developmental regression in a group of previously normal children, which was generally associated in time with possible environmental triggers.”
     The retraction stated:[58]
     “We wish to make it clear that in this paper no causal link was established between (the) vaccine and autism, as the data were insufficient. However the possibility of such a link was raised, and consequent events have had major implications for public health. In view of this, we consider now is the appropriate time that we should together formally retract the interpretation placed upon these findings in the paper, according to precedent.”[59]

     Ironically, it seems that Wakefield, (and not the drug companies, doctors, nurses, pharmacists, FDA, politicians and everyone else accused of having managed to miraculously keep this vaccine killing and maiming spree conspiracy a complete secret for the past 30 years) was the guy taking bribes for lying about the dangers of vaccines.

Even if we ignore that Wakefield’s medical license was revoked for misconduct in presenting the original, falsified “research,” I fail to see how the linked article from PLOS ONE supports his claim, and based on the headline on the article I’m reading on this page, I cannot believe that we could have actually read the same paper.
     I read an article about a study describing differences in gene expression in patients with and without ASD who also have an autoimmune disease affecting the GI tract. There is no mention of immunization in the research at all. Granted, the author has barely mentioned the actual PLOS ONE paper in this article at all (not to mention done a poor job of summarizing it), and it appears to me that it is merely an “excuse” to defend the discredited Andrew Wakefield.

     Furthermore, I find the perpetuation of the myth that vaccines cause autism to be truly reprehensible, a danger to the public and the children who remain unvaccinated, and is nothing more than fear-mongering that doesn’t stand up against any actual science.

246. Because if you point out that he was disbarred for being a bad doctor, it might just make his unproven and dangerous claim that vaccines are bad seem less believable.

247. Why is Andrew Wakefield referred to as Dr in this article? He was disbarred for ‘serious professional misconduct’ and can no longer claim that title. There has been enough misinformation in this debate- why cloud the issue further?
