Orion 23 Joint Military Exercises Taking Place in France Until May

ER Editor: We’re really not sure what this keeping’em busy exercise is all about except that 7,000 conventionally trained French troops stand no chance against Russian forces in Ukraine. Discerning readers will know what we mean when we wonder about the involvement, or not, of the white hats.

Apparently, these exercises are drawing in troops from a number of NATO countries:

But the latest military exercises are not lacking in either ambition or resources. With an estimated cost of €35 million, Orion 23 is being conducted on an unprecedented scale.

The exercises involve personnel from a range of European countries, including Britain, Germany, Italy, Spain, Belgium and the Netherlands – as well as the United States.

The war games are being conducted in four phases over the next few months. Following the weekend’s manoeuvres, which were part of phase two operations after the phase one planning stage, French troops will conduct war games in the Massif de la Gardiole region north of Frontignan until March 11.

A civil-military phase three focusing on the civilian support operations backing the armed forces in the event of a major engagement (medical and transport services, etc.), the reserves and information warfare will last through the end of March.

The climax of the exercises is expected to come in the spring, from late April to early May, in northeastern France. Around 12,000 troops in total will be deployed on the ground and in the skies to repel a high-intensity air-land invasion of “Arnland” by “Mercure”.

This NATO link suggests that a PART of this exercise (a short, amphibious part) is NATO-related. But there is a curious lack of NATO references when doing an online search for this topic.

Orion 23, a historic military landing, takes place in FRANCE

SPUTNIK NEWS

Against the backdrop of the conflict in Ukraine and Moscow’s suspension of its participation in the New Start treaty, France is training to face a powerful enemy. Historic maneuvers involving 7,000 soldiers are being held until March 11 in the south of France.

7,000 soldiers have been mobilized for the Orion major military exercise which takes place until March 11 in the Mediterranean and in the south of France. It simulates the invasion of a foreign country.
The objective is to prepare for a high intensity conflict against a conventional army. The military scenario takes place in a fictional country called Arnland, destabilized by militias led by its neighboring country, Mercury.

Unheard of for 30 years

The maneuvers also include an amphibious landing in the Mediterranean and tank fire. Such an event has not been seen for 30 years.
For the 2024-2030 military programming law, Emmanuel Macron announced an increase of 100 billion euros allocated, notes RFI. The second part of Orion is scheduled for spring in northeastern France. It should hire 12,000 people. French troops plan to repeat these maneuvers every three years.
.
For his part, Vladimir Putin announced on February 21 that Moscow was suspending its participation in the Russian-American New Start treaty on nuclear disarmament, which does not take into account the French and British strategic arsenals. Indeed, the cumulative number of nuclear warheads available to France, the United Kingdom and the United States is far greater than that of Russia.
.
Russia is forced to return to discussions on the nuclear potential of these two countries because NATO has shown that it is a military bloc and not a political one, Putin said in an interview.
