Pro-Life Movie ‘Unplanned’ Exceeds Box Office Expectations

The independently produced pro-life move Unplanned exceeded expectations in its debut with an estimated $6.1 million  U.S.box-office gross from 1,059 theaters.  Tracking estimates had the movie selling $3 million in tickets.

“Unplanned” is based on the true story of former Planned Parenthood clinic director Abby Johnson, who quit the organization in 2009 after witnessing an abortion at 13 weeks.

The movie was produced by faith-based distributor Pure Flix — the studio behind “God’s Not Dead 2” ($7.6 million) and co-financed by My Pillow founder Michael Lindell, who is a born-again Christian.

“We are thrilled, gratified and humbled,” co-directors Cary Solomon and Chuck Konzelman said Sunday in a statement. “We are so pleased that the American people have responded with such an enormous outpouring of support at the box office. It humbles us and we look forward to seeing what happens in the weeks ahead.”

The success of the movie came despite being slapped with an R rating by the MPAA and refusal of several TV networks to run ads for the politically incorrect film.

In addition to the ad blockade, on Saturday, Twitter briefly suspended the @UnplannedMovie account, which has more than 200,000 followers and appeared to block lead actress Ashley Bratcher from following her own movie.

Planned Parenthood said in a statement that the movie “promotes many falsehoods, including, most importantly, distortions and incorrect depictions about health care.”

The Liberty Beacon Project is now expanding at a near exponential rate, and for this we are grateful and excited! But we must also be practical. For 7 years we have not asked for any donations, and have built this project with our own funds as we grew. We are now experiencing ever increasing growing pains due to the large number of websites and projects we represent. So we have just installed donation buttons on our websites and ask that you consider this when you visit them. Nothing is too small. We thank you for all your support and your considerations … (TLB)
