Thousands have gathered in central Paris in support of the former leader of the right-wing National Rally party (RN), Marine Le Pen. The three-time presidential candidate received a prison sentence for embezzlement last Monday.

Backed by 120 RN MPs, Le Pen addressed the crowd from a temporary stage erected at Place Vauban on Sunday. She called her prosecution a political “witch-hunt,” vowing to “not give up.”

“This decision has trampled on everything I hold most dear: My people, my country, and my honor,” she said as supporters waved flags and chanted “Marine for president!” and “They won’t steal 2027 from us!”

A Paris court sentenced Le Pen to four years in prison, two of which are suspended, while the other two will be served under a form of house arrest. She also received a five-year ban on holding political office, which effectively disqualifies her from the 2027 presidential race.

According to the prosecutors, the veteran politician used EU funds intended for the work of aides in the European Parliament to pay for staffers in France. She denied any wrongdoing and vowed to appeal the verdict. (ER: According to the article we posted above, lots of political parties can fall into this vague trap of using parliamentary assistants, only to be accused of ‘working instead for the party’. Le Pen’s lawyers argued that if you are a parliamentary assistant, then you necessarily ‘work for the party’ and further, that the rules governing this area are very vague anyway.)

During the rally, Le Pen blasted the EU and its anti-fraud agency, OLAF, calling it a “totalitarian organism.”

“The system’s only purpose is to stay in place, no matter the cost,” she said, claiming that certain politicians are being persecuted throughout the EU.

“Uncomfortable candidates are prevented from running,” she stated, in reference to Romanian presidential candidate Calin Georgescu, who was also recently barred from taking part in an election.

According to the organizers of the rally, 5,000 to 8,000 people were expected to turn up at the event, Politico reported. During the rally, RN leader Jordan Bardella said 10,000 people were in attendance.

“The people must be free to choose their leaders – without interference from political judges,” he told the crowd. The police put the number of demonstrators at 7,000, according to The Guardian.

Around 5,000 people took part in a left-wing counter-protest in Paris on Sunday. It was attended by the head of the Green Party, Marine Tondelier, and the national coordinator of France Unbowed, Manuel Bompard.

The Liberty Beacon Project is now expanding at a near exponential rate, and for this we are grateful and excited! But we must also be practical. For 7 years we have not asked for any donations, and have built this project with our own funds as we grew. We are now experiencing ever increasing growing pains due to the large number of websites and projects we represent. So we have just installed donation buttons on our websites and ask that you consider this when you visit them. Nothing is too small. We thank you for all your support and your considerations … (TLB)
