The United Nations security council has adopted a historic resolution demanding a halt to all Israeli settlement in the occupied territories after Barack Obama’s administration refused to veto the resolution and instead chose to abstain. US ambassador Samantha Power said on Friday that the Israeli settlement ‘seriously undermines Israel’s security’

US abstention allows UN to demand end to Israeli settlements

Dating back to the 1940s the Palestinians and the Israelis have been at odds over the “West Bank” issue. In a historical U.N. vote today, with the United States abstaining from voting, the U.N. Security Council passed a resolution urging Israel to stop building settlements on occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem.

The resolution said the establishment of settlements by Israel has “no legal validity and constitutes a flagrant violation under international law.”

It was adopted with 14 votes in favor (the USA obtained), to a round of applause.

Here is how the Resolution stood as of last night… it appeared to be in limbo with no hint it would shake out as it did today, especially after Israel ask Obama to Veto the measure.

Here with a perspective worth noting is this report from Al Jazeera
