As The World Burns Around Me … WHO AM I ?
-
I have never been awakened by the terrifying sound of gunfire all around me!
-
I have never been horrified by the shock waves emanating from tank and artillery shells exploding across my neighborhood!
-
I have never crouched in fear in the corner of my home as missiles rain down from the sky!
-
I have never watched in guarded anger as my neighbors are forcibly pulled from their homes only to disappear forever!
-
I have never run for cover and hidden as foreign troops invade my community in force, with no regard for property or life!
-
I have never had to stand and watch as my home of a lifetime is bulldozed out of existence, just for speaking the truth!
-
I have never crouched in fear every time any aircraft passes overhead, waiting in nerve-wracking anticipation for the next strike to come!
-
I have never entered a building wondering if it is the target of the next unseen drone attack!
-
I have never had to explain to a shell shocked and distraught child why their mother or father will never be there to hug and comfort them again.
-
I have never imagined living in a place where children cannot go outside and play for fear that one of the above harbingers of death may claim them.
-
I have never even considered the implications of living in a community where funerals of slain neighbors and family members outnumber all other social events on a continuous basis.
Because …

I am comfortable in my security that these horrible conditions only exist elsewhere, in far away places, and will never infringe on my comfort zone.

I am complacent in the belief that this is only an occasional video clip on television and I can, with the flip of a switch, remove it from my reality.
-
I feel confident that these actions are being perpetrated in my name to guarantee me the freedom I feel I deserve, even at the expense of others freedoms and lives.
-
I feel a (false) pride in the fact that my country has a very powerful military, so these are things I will never be forced to suffer.
-
I am ignorant of the truth, and don’t really feel the need to take the time from my programmed existence to find out what the facts or the reality truly is.
-
I am complacent, apathetic and even arrogant in my feelings of justified superiority.
But even in my ignorance of this troubled world, reality seeps into my self imposed and comfortable isolation, and my eyes are slowly being forced open … to see how the world burns around me.

I have no choice.
-
I am awakening to the truth.
-
I am ashamed.
-
I am angry.
-
Please forgive me.
-
I am an American.
Written in memory of the millions of deceased innocents (collateral damage) in the middle east and elsewhere in this burning world … that far too many Americans DON’T wish to know about.
So … is the Conscience of We The People truly and totally dead … Or is “programmed ignorance” the new norm?
