Today, Austria suspended the law on compulsory adult vaccination, which had been in effect since February 5. This measure, like others before it – for example the confinement of the unvaccinated, was strongly criticized at the time of its application. It didn’t last long either, in particular because of (or thanks to?) the characteristics of the Omicron variant, which was much less dangerous than Delta.
The opposition was not long in coming
As soon as the law was adopted by the Federal Council of the Austrian Parliament, the citizens were in a state of combat to oppose it. In the street, the agitation was growing, with constant and diversified demonstrations. Two nascent political parties (MFG and FPÖ) led a considerable part of these gatherings, and of the debates.
Just in time before the penalties
Those who contravened the general vaccination obligation risked a fine of 600 to 3,600 euros. And, from mid-March 2022, the police were to crack down again. Obviously, they won’t have the time for that. Karoline Edtstadler, Federal Minister for the Constitution in Austria, declared today at a press conference in Vienna that she had ” decided to follow the opinion of the commission of experts ” by suspending the text. She justified this by explaining that the Omicron variant was less dangerous than its Delta predecessor. And to add with regard to the Constitution: “There are currently many arguments to say that this attack on fundamental rights is not justified.”
It should also be noted that the application of the law has absolutely not made it possible to boost the rate of vaccination in the country. Despite everything, the Austrian government has indicated that a progress report will be made in three months, taking more or less the same speech as in France: because “the virus is constantly evolving, we must also be flexible and adaptable ”. The ministers therefore seem to reserve the right to resort to the law again.
