New York: In a major breakthrough in the fight against cancer, researchers at Cornell University claimed to have isolated a protein that causes metastasized tumors, which is the major cause of cancer-related deaths.
The study, “TRAIL-Coated Leukocytes that Kill Cancer Cells in the Circulation,” was published online last week in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
The team, led by Michael King, Cornell professor of biomedical engineering Michael King, has isolated a protein that causes metastasized tumors to implode at contact.
“About 90 percent of cancer deaths are related to metastases, but now we’ve found a way to dispatch an army of killer white blood cells that cause apoptosis – the cancer cell’s own death – obliterating them from the bloodstream. When surrounded by these guys, it becomes nearly impossible for the cancer cell to escape,” said Michael King.
King and his team combined the protein, Tumor Necrosis Factor Related Apoptosis-Inducing Ligand (or TRAIL) with an adhesive protein (E-selectin) and injected into the blood stream to latch onto white blood cells. As cancer cells begin to metastize and spread through the blood stream, the TRAIL protein infects them and causes the cancer cell to kill itself.
In the laboratory, the team injected TRAIL into the circulating blood of mice with cancer and produced a 100% success rate in killing the cancer.
According to the scientists, surgery, radiation and chemotherapy are effective at treating primary tumors, but their efficacy lessens when the cancer spreads to other parts of the body. However, the discovery of the protein TRAIL could work as a major step in treating cancer.

There’s always “a long way to go” after these animal “studies” (grant-seeking successes), and in that time period people always forget those promises, but as you demonstrate here, people go on believing in the “hopefulness” of using animals as test subjects, and the money train keeps on rolling. And the innocent lives are put through hell in their short time on this beautiful planet, where they see none of it except from behind bars, suffering at the hands of deranged people. Sorry lot, humanity 🙁
Sue, so right, can’t believe the people doing Chemo & rad, go out in sun for 20 min.Most people I know sent home to die,refused medical,lived on bc they changed they’re diet,that includes every type of cancer.The most people killed in USA each year is medical prof 750K.
Until we get a truly elected gov’t will we actually have food safety,for those who don’t know or care on shelves.
Unfortunately, these periodic announcments of “breakthroughs” in cancer “research” are nothing more than hype. The industries and their fake charities which have become extremely wealthy by having the sheeple walk for a cure, run for a cure, bike for a cure, etc., don’t want a cure. The cures are in nature, and the prevention is there, also. People have been using them all along. And anyone who wishes to believe that experiments on animals will lead to cures for them, deserves the bitter disappointment that being led around by the nose and advocating ANYTHING for the benefit of oneself always brings.
