Malaysia bans Israeli ships in its docks in support of Gaza

The US has formed a coalition against Yemen in response to attacks against Israeli-linked shipping companies

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim of Malaysia issued a statement on 20 December announcing that the nation will immediately bar the Israeli shipping company Zim from using its docks.

“The Malaysian government decided to block and disallow the Israeli-based shipping company Zim from docking at any Malaysian port,” Prime Minister Ibrahim said in a statement on social media. “The Ministry of Transport will take immediate action by imposing a permanent ban on this company with immediate effect.”

Ibrahim also said that in 2002, the Cabinet of Malaysia allowed ships from Zim to dock in Malaysia; and in 2005, the Cabinet permitted Zim to land in Malaysia, but that the government has now decided to cancel all prior decisions on the shipping company Zim.

“These sanctions are in response to Israel’s actions that ignore basic humanitarian principles and violate international law through the ongoing massacre and brutality against Palestinians,” the Malaysian prime minister stated.

The Malaysian government said they will no longer accept ships that bear the Israeli flag to use their docks. They will also ban ships en route to Israel from loading cargo in Malaysia.

Ibrahim is confident that these bans will not affect the nation’s trade activity.

Israeli ships have been targeted in solidarity actions by Yemen as well. On 26 November, the Yemeni armed forces launched a drone attack against a Zim ship.

Due to the threats and attacks by Yemen, the Israeli shipping company decided to change its shipping route to avoid passing through the Bab al-Mandab strait, instead opting to take the longer way around the African continent.

“In light of the threat to the safe transit of global trade in the Arabian and Red Seas, Zim is taking temporary proactive measures to ensure the safety of its crews, vessels, and customer cargo by rerouting some of its vessels,” the Zim statement reads.

In response to the Yemeni threat in the Red Sea against Israel-linked ships, the US has launched a multi-national coalition “to uphold the foundational principle of freedom of navigation.” The nations forming this coalition include both Arab and foreign states, as well as several others who chose to remain unnamed.

The Liberty Beacon Project is now expanding at a near exponential rate, and for this we are grateful and excited! But we must also be practical. For 7 years we have not asked for any donations, and have built this project with our own funds as we grew. We are now experiencing ever increasing growing pains due to the large number of websites and projects we represent. So we have just installed donation buttons on our websites and ask that you consider this when you visit them. Nothing is too small. We thank you for all your support and your considerations … (TLB)
