In this article I wanted to give readers an example of how NGOs undermine democracy in the U.K. In recent weeks NGOs have come up in the news a fair bit – particularly as Elon Musk and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni have laid into George Soros and his Open Society Foundations. But what exactly is the issue with them?
Perhaps the biggest problem I’ve seen – during months of trawling through NGO activities (some of which receive taxpayer funding) for my Woke Waste series – is their impact on immigration and asylum. Many NGOs effectively lobby for open borders. Take the Paul Hamlyn Foundation (PHF) which explicitly pushes for this. Below you’ll see its ‘Migration Fund’ (incidentally, HOPE not Hate Charitable Trust has been awarded this three times):
Extraordinarily, from 2020-23 PHF was given just under £1.4 million in Government grants. This is from the same Conservative Party that reassured us it would control borders through its Rwanda plan.
Another foundation that’s extremely intent on open borders is A B Charitable Trust (not taxpayer funded this time). Its website says it “promotes human dignity and defends the human rights of marginalised and excluded people”, with one of its priorities being “Migrants and Refugees”. It explains:
People who move to the U.K. often have to navigate a complex and hostile legal and policy environment, facing numerous barriers which undermine their ability to live with dignity. We support organisations working to achieve a just and supportive environment for people who migrate to the U.K., are refugees or seeking asylum.
As part of this, A B Charitable Trust works to deliver “narrative change”, among other endeavours.
What does this look like in practice? Well, the trust has been dishing out grants left, right and centre to organisations and initiatives that make it much easier for people to settle in the U.K., treating them only ever as victims against evil Brits. You can get the gist from the hundreds of organisations that have received funding from A B Charitable Trust, such as Bail for Immigration Detainees, Asylum Support Appeals Project, Migrants Organise, Legal Aid Practitioners Group, Sage Passage International, Gatwick Detainees Welfare Group, Afghan Association Paiwand and the Scottish Refugee Council.
The trust has vast amounts of wealth at its disposal, spending £6.3 million in 2023-24 – with hopes to give out £7.5 million in grants from 2024-25. Most Brits will have never heard of its founders, Yves and Anne Bonavero, but the former – born and educated Paris – appears to have made his money in property before expanding his business empire. Interestingly one organisation he founded was Woodsford Group Ltd., “which holds corporations to account for ESG breaches”. It sounds very on-brand for someone funding organisations such as HOPE not Hate Charitable Trust. Another member of the team is Philippe Bonavero, Chair of A B Charitable Trust, who specialises in immigration and asylum law and has chaired the trust’s grants committee since 2020.
Individually, some organisations have had millions in funding from A B Charitable Trust. One example is the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants, which has received £2.9 million since 2014 and perfectly illustrates the problem with NGOs. Below you will see its post from last year in which it boasts about blocking flights to Rwanda:
SUCCESS! All of our clients who were facing removal to Rwanda have now been released thanks to the tremendous work of our legal team.
A lot of the British public know that human rights lawyers can be an obstacle to deportations and the Rwanda scheme going ahead, but NGOs help to explain how they’re funded.
With A B Charitable Trust and many other NGOs being privately funded, it’s easy to switch off and assume they aren’t an issue (“well, as long as I’m not paying tax for it”). In fact, they may be a greater problem than taxpayer-funded idiocy, as we are utterly clueless about who is pouring money into Britain and whether they have our best interests at heart.
A reckoning with these political meddlers cannot come soon enough.

The Liberty Beacon Project is now expanding at a near exponential rate, and for this we are grateful and excited! But we must also be practical. For 7 years we have not asked for any donations, and have built this project with our own funds as we grew. We are now experiencing ever increasing growing pains due to the large number of websites and projects we represent. So we have just installed donation buttons on our websites and ask that you consider this when you visit them. Nothing is too small. We thank you for all your support and your considerations … (TLB)
