Monsanto and the Potential Dangers of GMO’s

In the most comprehensive lab study performed on the dangers of GMO’s yet, last year it was concluded that long term consumption of genetically modified corn caused huge tumors and severe liver and kidney damage in rats.  Click on the following link for the complete study and pictures of the lab rats, but be warned that the pictures are graphic and disturbing. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2205509/Cancer-row-GM-foods-French-study-claims-did-THIS-rats–cause-organ-damage-early-death-humans.html

For those who are unfamiliar with the history of GMO’s and what they are:  genetically modified organisms are organisms that have been genetically altered in some fashion.  For the purposes of this article, I’ll specifically focus on genetically modified seeds, which are primarily manufactured by the giant biotechnology/agricultural company known as Monsanto.  Monsanto has been around for more than a century, and has been involved in the mass manufacturing of products such as rubber, vinyl goods, fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides, including the powerful herbicide known as Agent Orange, which was used by the U.S. military to “defoliate” jungles during the Vietnam War, and also led to the poisoning of Vietnamese citizens and U.S. military personnel.  It was in the 1970′s that Monsanto made its move into the development of biotechnology, culminating in 1982 when they became the first to genetically modify plant cells.  The purpose of this was to improve crop productivity and yield by splicing different cells together with plant cells.  This would also lead to the inclusion of herbicides and pesticides inside the seeds.

Experts estimate that upwards of 85 percent of the food that makes it to the shelf in the supermarket has some level of genetically modified ingredient, whether it be a corn, soy, or cotton product.  Most people continue to consume these foods, but meanwhile, are unaware of any potential dangers of long-term consumption.  Think of this issue being similar to the hazardous effects of tobacco that were neglected for decades because of clever marketing schemes by tobacco companies and their lobbying of government to keep these issues out of the public eye.  It wasn’t until it was too late for some tobacco users who developed cancers, heart disease, and a whole host of other ailments that the negative health effects were realized.  Presently in Monsanto, you have one of the top lobbyists on Capitol Hill year to year in terms of money spent, a powerful corporation that is arguably more strong than the tobacco industry was back in it’s heyday.

Monsanto’s egregious abuse of their power is underscored in the treatment of small organic farms, who they continually file lawsuits against and put out of business.  What happens is Monsanto’s patented seeds and crops which are located in close proximity to organic farms cross-contaminate the organic farms, and then the crops intended to be organic turn out to be genetically modified mutations thanks to the contamination of Monsanto’s GMO’s.  Monsanto sues for intellectual property infringement and through the cost of legal fees, put small farmers out of business, or win the lawsuit outright. http://ecowatch.com/2013/farmers-fight-monsanto/

While all of this takes place, we continue to consume GM foods without the required research to prove that these foods are safe.  Any limited research that has been conducted, such as the lab rat experiment mentioned earlier, has shown that the consumption of genetically modified foods can be harmful to your health.  This is obviously an issue that affects every person on the planet, in this generation and for generations to come.  You can visit the Non-GMO Project to learn more about the ongoing process of creating awareness of this issue http://www.nongmoproject.org/learn-more/.  If you would like to learn a bit on the history of Monsanto from their perspective, you can visit their site here http://www.monsanto.com/whoweare/Pages/monsanto-history.aspx.  Interesting to note they neglect to mention their history related to Agent Orange, which only a few months ago on February 1st came back into the public eye when they finally settled a joint lawsuit regarding the poison.  For that story, please follow this link http://indianapublicmedia.org/eartheats/monsanto-settles-agent-orange-lawsuit-93-million/
