Morals – Vanishing Before Our Eyes

Gin LaneBy: L. Femine

When the world is falling apart, we tend to search for a common thread to explain all the distress and confusion. We mull it over – there has to be a reason for all this. Otherwise, life becomes a mass of distraction and stress.

Too often, fingers point to this person, that group or religion; some political party or congressman; ad infinitum. We know because newspapers take full advantage of the sparks flying among all these targets; our attention flits from one to the other, trying to figure it all out.

The American pie is full of holes from all those fingers, to the point where we have nothing but crumbs to examine. Sure there are actual sources of all the trouble in the world today but if we look deeper for an underlying cause, we might come up with a declining, decaying, stinking with rot sense of morality.

Nero[1]When a president can commit horrific crimes leading to the total destruction of this country and be given a Nobel Peace Prize while a well-meaning, hard-working organic farmer is put in jail for selling healthy, raw milk, you have to wonder which ethical codes are being applied here?

So you can see moral standards may not just be vanishing – they are also reversing. Take post-birth abortion, as another example. Good one. This is where a failed abortion results in killing the baby after it’s born. If that was proposed in congress say…fifty years ago? You think that congressman would have been run out of town? You bet. He certainly wouldn’t have been re-elected.

Today, that bill, put up for a vote, would not likely damage his re-election, even with all his extramarital affairs and graft exposed for all to see – not all congressmen, of course, but enough to make it a lifestyle, something like an expansion of “free love” from the sixties.

Today, this baby-killing has already been considered. And we can’t just blame the doctors and congressmen. What backward morals does a woman practice to even have an abortion at six, seven, eight or even nine months? I guarantee that, whatever traditional, ethical religion a person follows, you won’t find in any of it’s teachings that a woman should kill her newborn if she doesn’t want it.

marriage1[1]Take marriage. It’s fashionable these days to get married and then get divorced a few months later if he or she doesn’t “fit.” Does mommy adjust her daughter’s veil just before her wedding, whisper in her ear and say, “You know, if it doesn’t work, you can always get divorced.” True story – my mother advised me of that on my wedding day. Kind of takes the sanctity out of marriage, doesn’t it?

Another prime example: if we protest paying two or three times more for healthcare through Obamacare or outright refuse to pay the fine for not accepting it, we become a criminal. We are labeled an immoral citizen rather than its opposite – citizens with the right to make our own decisions.

The next example which I’ve poured over in previous articles is drugs –psychiatric and otherwise. What does this mean, though, from the viewpoint of morals? It’s true we have the insane greed and general hatred of humanity flourishing in Big Pharma and Psychiatry. It’s easy to say it’s all their fault, a big hole in the pie. I agree; they are undeniably responsible.

But here’s the burning question: why do we put up with it? That endless rant – WAKE UP AMERICA! is still valid and incredibly vital. But wake up to what? I mean besides the shocking, deplorable facts and figures which outline the state of this planet. What is really occurring under the surface?

In an article entitled, “Reason why the Roman Empire Fell” it says, as one of the major causes:

“A decline in morals, especially in the rich upper classes and the emperors, had a devastating impact on the Romans. Immoral and promiscuous sexual behavior including adultery and orgies. Emperors such as Tiberius kept groups of young boys fall of rome[1]for his pleasure, incest by Nero who also had a male slave castrated so he could take him as his wife, Elagabalus who forces a Vestal Virgin into marriage, Commodus with his harems of concubines who enraged Romans by sitting in the theater dressed in a woman’s garments. The decline in morals also effected the lower classes and slaves. Religious festivals such as Saturnalia and Bacchanalia where sacrifices, ribald songs, lewd acts and sexual promiscuity were practiced. Bestiality and other lewd and sexually explicit acts were exhibited in the Colosseum arena to amuse the mob. Brothels and forced prostitution flourished. Widespread gambling on the chariot races and gladiatorial combats. Massive consumption of alcohol. The sadistic cruelty towards both man and beasts in the arena.”

Compare that to a survey done just a few years ago:

“Three-quarters of Americans say the country’s moral values are worsening, blaming a decline in ethical standards, poor parenting, and dishonesty by government and business leaders, Gallup reports. The number of Americans who say the nation’s moral values are in decline grew by 5 percent since last year. Other reasons Americans mentioned were a rise in crime, a breakdown of the two-parent family and a moving away from religion or God.”

Consider the bad guy in movies we’ve seen. In the end, he gets it because he was such an unethical dude. Along the same lines, when we consider the downfall of this country, is it such a coincidence it is happening along with this moral decay? Or are they feeding each other? What do we do about it?

john-adams-009[1]Here’s a quote from the John Adams: “The nature of the encroachment upon American constitution is such, as to grow every day more and more encroaching. Like a cancer; it eats faster and faster every hour. The revenue creates pensioners, and the pensioners urge for more revenue. The people grow less steady, spirited and virtuous, the seekers more numerous and more corrupt, and every day increases the circles of their dependents and expectants, until virtue, integrity, public spirit, simplicity and frugality become the objects of ridicule and scorn, and vanity, luxury, foppery, selfishness, meanness, and downright venality swallow up the whole of society.”

A code of ethical behavior which closely follows this wisdom can be found at the link below – The Way to Happiness. To truly be an ethical citizen very much includes insisting the government become ethical. That may include replacing as many as needed, as our constitution allows.
