Communication comes in many forms, from the way we express ourselves verbally and the way we express ourselves non-verbally. There are micro-expressions that are also conveyed and having healthy relationships, whether personal or professional are essential.
In this episode, I bring the viewers a guest who understands this so much that he has thought outside the box to truly foster healthy relationships. We discuss specifically how understanding communication impacts relationships and how it carries over into every other relationship we have.
We also discuss how communication is developed and the core of how we learned to communicate. Essentially, it is begun at home from the parents. Unfortunately, all too often, parents are influenced by media outlets, such as television, to use as a parenting model. What is seen on television leaves us complacent. We model what we see which was designed for entertainment purposes.
My guest provides the viewers so much information that we needed to end the show with having another episode. Therefore, we have a two part series where viewers can gain insight and make changes to ultimately have healthy relationships.
I am excited to bring to the viewers a prolific guest – Philip DeLuca, LCSW, who is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker; however, he prefers to be called the Un-Talk TM Therapist. He is also a psychotherapy disruptor, relationship healer, author, speaker and guinea pig. He has become what he calls a “psychotherapy disruptor” because he developed an alternative to conventional relationship counseling.
Conventional therapies that have been generally accepted are not always successful. We talk about how it is not always necessary to follow the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders that professionals, such as therapists, psychologists, and psychiatrists use (which has been updated at least 5 times)) to diagnose and treat people. After all, there are methods that are effective and fall out of the Freud and Maslow be-all to end-all theories and methodologies.
Dr. Un focused on successful therapy and developed a method opposite of what is conventionally accepted. He is a relationship healer because he uses a different approach aside from the “Express Yourself” communication approaches that actually damage relationships. He is also a guinea pig because he has used personal struggles to help develop this approach.
During a twelve month international speaking tour to promote his first book “The Solo Partner“, he saw- firsthand- the failure of conventional conflict resolution and became more solidly convinced that a new approach was badly needed.
He then turned to the latest body and brain science to upgrade the outdated “Express Yourself” model that had been developed in the 60’s, thus, becoming a guinea pig, and leading to a successful case study.
What Dr. Un developed became an alternative holistic model that frequently works where conventional couples therapy fail. The method brings quick results, in an easy to understand style and way of implementation. He calls is it “communication for the 21st century”.
He has had clients who have seemed to have tried everything and this was their last resort. The new approach has become the most efficient and effective way of resolving conflict in relationships.
