The focus of this episode of Rebecca Sounds Reveille evolves around understanding the struggles of both addiction and recovery. Addiction can come in many forms from substance abuse to shopping to eating disorders. Many people who have addictions know that all in all the addiction is creating problems in their lives. They do want to eliminate the addiction but it is too powerful to overcome.

It would seem the easy solution is to just stop doing whatever the addiction is. It’s just not that simple and finding recovery from it is just as challenging. Shame is so powerful in relation to the addiction, people do not want to speak or acknowledge it is a problem.

To truly understand addiction we have to understand what it is and how it works within the brain. There is high incident of genetic addiction, meaning that addiction can be programmed in the genes and passed on even skipping generations. This is not the only way an addiction comes about, but it really comes down to the neurorecptors in the brain that makes one person more susceptible to addiction than another.

To address recovery, it is important to start with prevention. Therefore, by understanding how addiction works, we can take measure to prevent it. We also need to openly talk about this more often so those who have a problem do not feel shamed in seeking help. Another effort that needs to be made is by individuals surrounding the person who has an addiction. Oftentimes, those close to the person who has a problem enable that person to continue the addiction. The healthiest thing a person can do is not enable them and intervene in that person’s life. Intervention is necessary. The intervention may need to be drastic such as a contact with law enforcement to bring the person to seek assistance. Hitting bottom for some, meaning they have lost loved ones, their finances, their jobs, and everything to the point they have nothing left but their life to lose, is when assistance is sought. This is not the result we should see.

On this episode, my expert guest Ronald Chapman and I, discuss these issues candidly to bring awareness to this increasing problem, to help individuals and families, so as to minimize shame and allow people to address these things or prevent them.
