In the United States, it’s estimated that the average person unintentionally eats one to two pounds of insects every year! How is this possible?
Today consumers are becoming more aware of the food products they eat and what is contained within. Living in a world of microbes, there are numerous opportunities for our food to become contaminated during manufacturing, including everything from bacteria to viruses.
With over 70,000 food additives, the American diet is filled with genetically modified foods, artificial ingredients, chemicals, pesticides, preservatives, fungus, molds, insects, rodents and other foreign matter which end up in the blood streams of human beings and yet there is no full proof way of protecting our food products 100% against the FDA’s regulations.
Bugs may be the next cute food trend – look for bug protein powder coming soon to your granola bars and shakes–but that’s quite a different matter from the insects being quietly slipped into your food. To name a few, the FDA allows maggots in canned mushrooms, mouse fur in peanut butter, fruit flies in tomato sauce, aphids or mites on broccoli, cockroaches in chocolate candy, caterpillars in frozen spinach, carmine which is crushed up beetles added to red candies such as skittles, sweedish fish and also found in yogurt.
Each year there is a certain percentage of consumers who experience illnesses from the foods they eat, diarrhea, vomiting, fever, cramps, masking as the flu when in reality these are foodborne illnesses. It is estimated by the CDC, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that one out of every six Americans, about forty eight million people will be sick, hospitalized due to these diseases and on average, five thousand people a year will die due to food poisoning.
