“Merck got away with murder, and continues to do so to this day.” ~Karen Langhart
Holy Hormones Journal: Just catching up with an article I saved – but never got around to post it. Of course any title with the name “Merck” in it catches my attention. And this one is no different. But I thought the article was about the HPV vaccine, Gardasil. And when I read through it – of course it was about a birth control product Merck manufactures called NuvaRing.
I have been saying for years that a pharmaceutical company who manufactures a birth control method that does not prevent against STD’s should not be also manufacturing a distributing the HPV vaccine to millions of girls across the country who have not factored in the dangers of unprotected sex – not due to pregnancy – but because of deadly sexually transmitted infections.
Another guise by Merck & Co. by frightening the hell out of young girls about a cancer (not even prevalent due to pap screening – and affecting women (historically) in the 50’s and 60’s in an area of their body they cannot see. Most are even grossed out by the bottom of this organ. Merck was even given a pharmaceutical company award for creating a market out of thin air for their Gardasil vaccine.
This is a well written scathing editorial by Ms. Montesano. And I am glad to see it.
The question remains – are women expendable in America?
Perhaps the lesson to be learned from this – at a great loss of life from hormone contraception and the Gardasil vaccine – is that women can no longer be ignorant. Profits have been made off our bodies for too long – and now the Catholic church male gynecologists want to bleach and reshape our labia.
I made a comment on Facebook last week – that it appears the more gains women make in the work place, and in careers – the more out bodies become the prey of the pharmaceutical and medical industries. Suppression comes in many different forms.
Why are girls dropping dead from Gardasil – we have our suspicions but we do not know. Why do some women develop blood clots and die from NuvaRing – again, we have our suspicions but we do not know. Is there such a thing as “acceptable risk?” If you are not told what the risks might be – then you will not have been given informed consent for their product – and that is illegal and immoral. Informed consent is your right. Ignorance is not. The same holds for Gardasil.
Hundreds – if not thousands of women are dying from birth control and from the HPV vaccine annually – and yet no seems to care.
Why are these products still on the market? It’s called “Big Drug Profits.”
Am guessing the answer to the question is that women are expendable.
One last thing – Merck’s motto is “Be Well.”
Hell.
Women Die While Merck Makes Big Drug Profits From Keeping Them Ignorant

Women’s lives are expendable in America. Unfortunately, the country’s second largest pharmaceutical company seems to be in agreement with politicians on that sad fact.
Drug company Merck produces a new form of hormonal birth control, NuvaRing, that increased the convenience of use but doubled the risk of developing life-threatening blood clots. The company deemed that an ‘acceptable risk’, but didn’t bother informing women. Instead, Merck emphasized that pregnancy can also result in women developing blood clots. Yes — but those aren’t the only two options. Not that anyone could figure that out from Merck’s propaganda.
NuvaRing is an easy contraceptive to use. The flexible ring is placed in the vagina every four weeks and then — forget about it until time to replace. It’s so easy that the product practically sold itself — and yielded phenomenal profits. In 2012, Merck made $623 million off the product. Profits have consistently grown since 2009, when Merck acquired the company that developed NuvaRing.
A third-generation progestin called desogestrel is the culprit in making the ring more deadly than earlier hormonal birth control pills. Many studies have concluded that the risk factor of clots developing with the use of desogestrel and other newer progestins is doubled. The result has been hundreds of fatalities or near-fatalities.
A class action lawsuit was filed against Merck by 3800 plaintiffs. Some had lost loved ones while others went through a traumatic medical ordeal themselves due to pulmonary embolisms. Merck recently settled the suit out of court for $100 million. Two family members involved in the suit opted out of the settlement. That would be Rick and Karen Langhart.
The Langharts’ 24-year-old daughter, Erika, collapsed in her apartment, unable to breathe due to massive blood clots in her lungs. On the way to the hospital, Erika suffered two heart attacks, as her body struggled to cope, and ultimately suffered irreversible brain swelling before she died. One of the first questions the doctor asked the parents was whether Erika was on a hormonal contraceptive. She had used the NuvaRing for four years. The danger was well known to some in the medical community, but not to the consumers who were using the product.
